Surely I can't be the only one on Facepunch that realizes the true gods of Grunge/Alt Metal. KEEP IN MIND the songs I added are personal favorites from the albums, more will be added later.
Soundgarden is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington in 1984 by lead singer Chris Cornell, lead guitarist Kim Thayil, and bassist Hiro Yamamoto. Matt Cameron became the band's permanent drummer in 1986 while bassist Ben Shepherd became a permanent replacement for Yamamoto in 1990. Soundgarden was one of the seminal bands in the creation of grunge, a style of alternative rock that developed in Seattle, and was one of a number of grunge bands signed to the record label Sub Pop. Soundgarden was the first grunge band to sign to a major label (A&M Records, in 1988), though the band did not achieve commercial success until they popularized "grunge" in the early 1990s with Seattle contemporaries Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam. Soundgarden achieved its biggest success with the 1994 album Superunknown, which debuted at number one on the Billboard charts and yielded the Grammy Award-winning singles "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman". In 1997, the band broke up due to internal strife over its creative direction. On January 1, 2010, Cornell alluded to a Soundgarden reunion. On April 5, 2010, it was announced that Soundgarden would play Lollapalooza in Chicago on August 6–8, 2010. A secret reunion concert under the name "Nudedragons" was held at the Showbox at the Market in Seattle on April 16, 2010. It was Soundgarden's first show since 1997.
Lyrics: http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/soundgarden-lyrics/d5abd01129c2e70b4825699d002abac5 Albums Ultramega OK
Ultramega OK is the debut studio album by the American grunge band Soundgarden, released on October 31, 1988 through SST Records. Following the release of the EPs Screaming Life (1987), and Fopp (1988), both for the Sub Pop record label, Soundgarden signed with the independent record label SST and went to work on its first full-length studio album. The resulting album contained elements of heavy metal, psychedelic rock, classic rock, and hardcore punk. The band supported the album with a tour of the United States as well as its first overseas tour. In 1990, the album earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Metal Performance.
My input: I love this album, it feel very experimental and you can tell they really bit the bullet in some of the songs. There's the clever 665, Beyond the Wheel, 667 track naming, and a cover of the Howlin' Wolf song Smokestack Lightning. Flower: Album's only single Beyond the Wheel Circle of Power: Unique in that it was sung by then-bassist Hiro Yamamoto Louder Than Love
Louder Than Love is the second studio album by the American alternative rock band Soundgarden, released on September 5, 1989 through A&M Records. After touring in support of its first full-length studio album, Ultramega OK (1988), Soundgarden signed with A&M and began work on its first album for a major label. The songs on the album featured a heavy metal sound with some songs featuring unusual or unorthodox time signatures. Because of some of the song lyrics the band faced various retail and distribution problems upon the album's release, including the addition of a Parental Advisory sticker on the album packaging. Louder Than Love would become the band's first album to chart on the Billboard 200. The band supported the album with tours of North America and Europe. It was the last Soundgarden album to feature the band's original bassist, Hiro Yamamoto.
My input: I did not enjoy this nearly as much as Ultramega OK. I do like Hands All Over, Gun, and Big Dumb Sex, but overall the album did not resonate much for me. Hands All Over Gun: Very heavy intro, love it Big Dumb Sex: A parody of the dying 80's glam metal innuendo sex songs Badmotorfinger
Badmotorfinger is the third studio album by the American alternative rock band Soundgarden, released on October 8, 1991 through A&M Records. After touring in support of its previous album, Louder Than Love (1989), Soundgarden began the recording sessions for its next album with new bassist Ben Shepherd. The music on the album maintained the band's heavy rock sound while featuring an increased focus on songwriting as compared with the band's previous releases.[1] The focus on the Seattle grunge scene helped bring attention to Badmotorfinger. The singles "Outshined" and "Rusty Cage" were able to find an audience at alternative rock radio and MTV. Badmotorfinger became the band's highest charting album at the time on the Billboard 200. The band supported the album with tours of North America and Europe, including opening for Guns N' Roses on that band's Use Your Illusion Tour. In 1992, Badmotorfinger was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. The album has been certified two times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in the United States, and had, by October 2010, sold 1,517,000 copies in the United States.
My Input: First Soundgarden album I ever heard, after borrowing it from dad years ago. Very heavy, I'd consider it metal if anything. A HUGE improvement over their last album. Soundgarden began work on the album after touring in support of its previous album, Badmotorfinger (1991). Superunknown captured the heaviness of the band's earlier releases while displaying a more diverse range of influences. Superunknown was a critical and commercial success and became the band's breakthrough album. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and reached high positions on charts worldwide. Five singles were released from the album: "The Day I Tried to Live", "My Wave", "Fell on Black Days", "Spoonman" and "Black Hole Sun", the latter two of which won Grammy Awards and helped Soundgarden reach mainstream popularity. In 1995, the album was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. The album has been certified five times platinum by the RIAA in the United States and remains Soundgarden's most successful album. In 2003, the album was ranked number 336 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
My input: Their big break, I love absolutely every song on this album. If you've heard anything, you've heard Black Hole Sun. Fell On Black Days The Day I Tried to Live Black Hole Sun Down on the Upside
Down on the Upside is the fifth studio album by the American grunge band Soundgarden, released on May 21, 1996 through A&M Records. Following a worldwide tour in support of its previous album, Superunknown (1994), Soundgarden commenced work on a new album. The music on the album was notably less heavy than the group's preceding albums and featured the band experimenting with other sounds. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and spawned the singles "Pretty Noose", "Burden in My Hand", "Blow Up the Outside World", and "Ty Cobb". The band took a slot on the 1996 Lollapalooza tour and afterward supported the album with a worldwide tour. Down on the Upside would end up becoming Soundgarden's final studio album as tensions within the band led to its break-up in April 1997. The album has been certified platinum by the RIAA in the United States.
My Input: Probably my personal favorite album, and their last to date. Pretty Noose Blow Up The Outside World Burden In My Hand They've since reunited and are making a 6th studio album. A compilation, Telephantasm, was released with a new single. Any input/stuff I should add?
I approve. [editline]6th December 2010[/editline] cant decide which album is my favourite
I suggest you give them all a fair try. Most, if not all, of their songs are on youtube of course. If you really get into it, I suggest a bit of Audioslave, which isn't quite as good but still great, and Chris Cornell's solo stuff.
Also I don't like that their new video clip concerned Metalocalypse. Hate me, love me. I don't care. I don't it.
It doesn't fit at all, I don't get why they hired Brendon Small to do it. Sure, he's a great director and cartoonist but it doesn't make sense.
Agreed.
full on (reprise) is one of the greatest songs of all time
whenever I head soundgarden I think audioslave I don't know why...
full on (reprise) is one of the greatest songs of all time
I don't care much for Full On or the Reprise, since the entire song is basically Full On over and over.
whenever I head soundgarden I think audioslave I don't know why...
Well, Chris Cornell is the lead singer for both. Audioslave was just a supergroup consisting of the frontman of Soundgarden and the instrumentalists from RAtM
I remember when Down on the Upside came out.. I still have it on cassette along with Colour and the Shape. 90's era rock/grunge ftw.
