FCC to rewrite net neutrality rules, won’t appeal court ruling
The Federal Communications Commission said Wednesday it will rewrite sweeping broadband Internet rules known as net neutrality, ending a legal battle that has thrown into question the agency’s ability to protect consumers on the Web.
The FCC said new rules will ban Internet service providers such as Verizon and Time Warner Cable from blocking Web sites or charging a firm like Netflix more for faster and smoother delivery of content.
The move comes after a federal appeals court last month vacated the FCC’s 2010 Open Internet rules. The U.S. District Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia said the agency overstepped its authority with the rules but also noted that the agency has some oversight over the broadband industry.
Glad to see that they are correcting the past oversight.
Yes, thank you.
I really shouldn't have to pay a subscription on top of my base subscription to watch content provided through a third subscription. Two subscriptions is enough, thanks.
the internet is a series of tubes; you can't fuck with those precious tubes.
this is better than the second coming of Scientologys alien god xenu.
Can't lie, this is really good news to hear. Especially after all those "the intenet is ruined" news articles cropping up
Well...we'll see. What they need to do is reclassify ISPs altogether, but the telecoms have so much pull with Congress and the FCC that it's probably never going to happen.

If they had "so much pull" then why did they let this happen?
They should create a new classification for telecom providers beyond "common carriers" called "total fucking dipshits". Effectively it would be the same as classifying them as common carriers but it would make legal documents more accurate.

The ISP would be charging Netflix, not you.
Both Europe and America seem to be making actual progress towards Net Neutrality, I wonder if the momentum will keep up.

I think he was referring to the cable-package internet thing, where you pay to access websites or some shit.
Now make data caps illegal.
Now if we can somehow get them upgrade the lines from these archaic pieces of hogwash, then things would be absolutely for the better.

came into this thread pessimistic
this is a pleasant surprise.
If they had "so much pull" then why did they let this happen?
Because the FCC is quite literally the only properly functioning branch of government.
My step dad works for the FCC in Boston MA. Wonder if he's working on this or something else :D
When I heard this on NPR today I almost screamed.
This is great progress.

FDA, FTC, FS, and EPA are all functioning. Hell, I'm afraid of them because they set regulations without the need of legislation
Now make data caps illegal.
please
If they were overstepping their mark before enforcing net neutrality, how will they not now?
If they had "so much pull" then why did they let this happen?
Because this is the lesser of two 'evils' in their (the telecoms) eyes. They will still profit from being virtual monopolies in most areas since this bill doesn't address that, but being reclassified as common carriers would severely hurt their ability to shit on their customers.
so this will completely stop Tony abbott's plan to put in an internet filter for Australia?

This is in America so no

Because while the court said they overstepped their authority, they also defined how much authority the FCC does have.

Yes, I read the article.
If they were overstepping their authority by creating regulations that restricted ISPs from blocking one network, how do they expect to get around it?

Reclassifying ISPs.
