So the other day I was at work (I work from my mom's house) and my dad asked me if I wanted a free Tilt 2, it was in way better condition than mine and the case was way better than mine (T-Mobile vs AT&T)
He used his Tilt 2 for work, so Intel had paid for it, and he had recently upgraded, so free phone sweet.
Well we both realized quickly I'd need to get it unlocked to use it on my SP, so after a few hours of research I came to the conclusion that if I wanted to unlock it for free, I'd have to call AT&T and trick them.
I researched multiple ways and finally chose one. Suprisingly enough, only saying you bought a phone on eBay and needed it to be unlocked to use for your SP was enough. The guy asked me model and make, then gave me the unlock code! I was shocked!
Has anyone had a bad experience doing this? I think I might even get my old one unlocked if this method works with multiple SP's.
I called my provider a few days ago to enqure if my phone IMEI was locked, or not (just out of pure curiosity). Surprisingly the woman on the other end came back and said. "I've unlocked it for you, we're sorry to hear you're considering moving network (I never said that). As a good will ghesture with hopes that you'll stay with our service, we've credited your phone with £10 free calltime, if you have any further enquiries, please feel free to ring back". Then she hung up on me.
So just for asking if my phone was unlocked (I never planned to switch provider, I was just curious), I got it unlocked, and a free £10 of credit.
If I needed to unlock my phone, I'd most likely just go through a service for like $5. 30 minute hassle on the phone isn't worth it to me.
You can flash a custom rom and radio combo that will disregard the carrier ID and allow you to use it on any network. I used to have a touch pro and the custom roms and radio firmwares destroyed the stock ones in every way,( extended battery life, better signal, much faster, newer WinMo version.)
Though your going to need to do research into flashing and setting up the new carrier.
Aren't carriers supposed to let you unlock phones for free anyway? I thought by law they had to let you transfer to other networks

By doing that she doesn't give anyone the chance to bitch and she also makes a satisfied customer (normally).
It's a win/win.

Not if it means breaking a contract.
