During Arcade Fire's Coachella's headlining set on the fest's first weekend, frontman Win Butler made a remark that has rankled Deadmau5. "Shout out to all the bands still playing actual instruments at this festival," he said. Now the DJ has fired back at Butler with a series of tweets.

You'd think musicians would generally be respectful to one other regardless of what means they use to create music.
why people even use this "omg all they do is press play button" dumb argument against electronic music, has everyone for some reason forgot that the music has to be written first, and that kinda takes skill and talent?
Sorry, but who the fuck are Arcade Fire? :v:
Only an asshole would be this disparaging on the means used to make music. He'd be better off trying to point out bad music in particular instead of dissing how it was made in general.

Ignorance, I'm just surprised it would be coming out of the mouth of an accomplished musician. You'd think someone in his position would know better than that.
Surely I'm not the only guy who finds it kinda funny that this comes from a band that also has one of their members double as a synth player? Or the fact that Win Butler also plays keyboard in AF?
purposely stirring shit up for publicity
purposely stirring shit up for publicity
Well, the only publicity they should get out of it should come under the bad kind. Sometimes, Karma needs to be a bitch to some harder than usual.
I find it hilarious it was Arcade Fire of all bands that said such a pointless statement.
I remember this band being a big part of when the whole "hipster" thing started becoming a term
we all hit play.
its no secret. when it comes to “live” performance of EDM… that’s about the most it seems you can do anyway. It’s not about performance art, its not about talent either (really its not) In fact, let me do you and the rest of the EDM world button pushers who fuckin hate me for telling you how it is, a favor and let you all know how it is.
I think given about 1 hour of instruction, anyone with minimal knowledge of ableton and music tech in general could DO what im doing at a deadmau5 concert. Just like i think ANY DJ in the WORLD who can match a beat can do what “ANYONE else” (not going to mention any names) is doing on their EDM stages too. have a look, then let me explain:

At the end of the day, who the fuck cares? I don't know what deadmau5 uses to produce his music, but I like acoustic instruments just as much as electronic instruments, DAW music included. If it sounds good it sounds good and that's subjective.

Why does hardly anyone know who Arcade Fire is in the UK? They've had two number one albums here, which means someone must have bloody bought them :v:

case in point "when it comes to “live” performance of EDM"
We aren't talking about live EDM performers.. producing still takes skill like its already been said.

in the context of "at this festival" you'd assume a live performance

And the only thing Win Butler mentioned was people playing instruments at the actual festival, something which Deadmau5 claims not to do, if that tumblr post is accurate.

It's pretty clear that Arcade Fire's comment was talking about live EDM performances. He said it at a festival, and obviously you can't produce an EDM album just by hitting play.
Don't a lot of famous musicians have someone else write their music?

I really wish Deadmau5 would stop talking for every DJ.

They're the band that had that one song in the Where The Wild Things Are trailer.

I love this article.

Arcade Fire is already pretty famous. They headlined the final day, right after beck, calvin harris, and neutral milk hotel.

not arcade fire

Ah I see; but for instance, the electronic producers Above & Beyond use live instruments (for some of their live shows). The producer Pretty Lights has a live drummer (not always). There are many live producers I know of that try to innovate live sets with new tricks, but obviously there are just as many that just press play.

Disclosure and Bonobo also perform with instruments.
to be honest I agree with him. Sorry to everyone who is a fan of electronic music, I love a lot of it too, but to be honest it's just not impressive at all when people just hit a button and they maybe mix a few things here are there. I both make music through a program and through instruments, and I can say playing a song live with instruments is just a completely other skillset that takes lots of practice and focus and I feel I get my moneys worth when I see skilled musicians actually play their music live, not when some guy just hits a few buttons here and there.
I do however have much respect to the electronic musicians who actually do really perform their work live, where it's much more than pressing a button and there is a lot of active things you have to do and keyboard playing, and improvisation and such. Those kinds of shows are fucking awesome, but I don't really know a lot of mainstream electronic musicians like deadmouse who really do that.
I know I will probably get some flak for that, but I just can't defend people who barely do anything on stage.

I know he's talking specifically about EDM here, but take this with a grain of salt. There are plenty of electronic-centric musicians who do truly live shows (particularly outside of EDM but not to stereotype or anything), such as Autechre, Ceephax Acid Crew, Boards of Canada (when they did shows), so on and so forth.
I know he meant well by saying that but he's really not helping the case of people who do live shows.
Was this phrase even directed to deadmau5 though?

Well he's talking about a live venue, where you would expect them to play live.
Just like every other live band regardless of genre, because people generally think it's lazy and uninteresting when a band has their music pre-recorded and is just pretending to play. If your live performance is simply your studio recording played through bigger speakers, why should people be interested in the show? Part of the assumption going into a live show is that it will actually be live.
