I've spent the last few minutes prodding the Steam Music beta. You can, too: it's now open to all who want to try it. It's, er, well basically, it's an mp3 player. But one that you can access in-game, through the Steam overlay. Yes, I know, not revolutionary, but there are a some reasons why it might be useful.
For instance: Big Picture mode. If your PC is hooked up to a TV and a control pad, it's a pretty convenient way to blast out some custom tunes (that's still a thing people say, right?). And with the impending Steam Machines and Steam Controller, it makes sense that Valve would want to offer this type of in-app player.
Apart from that, it's a pretty basic tool. Thanks to the combination of standalone media players and keyboard shortcuts, I doubt an integrated Steam player was high on people's gaming wishlist. But it is early in the beta process, and that means there may be planned features that make Steam Music a worthwhile addition. For one thing, it's increasingly common for games to offer soundtrack "DLC" through Steam. Currently, they're just deposited into that game's Steam folder—but having them caught by the player would make sense as an option.
And, of course, it still needs to be Valvified. It'll be interesting to see if there are plans for weird sharing schemes, or playlist features, or any of the other ways Valve like to use their users to enhance their features.
To try the app, head to the Steam settings and opt-in to the latest Steam Beta Update.
hopefully they'll add Spotify and WiMP support in the future. I never save stuff locally anymore, and if I ever do, it's .flac which this doesn't support.
It's about time, some games I alt tab out of freeze or crash.

Why the fuck doesn't it support FLAC?
Afaik it will support FLAC and more file formats later.
Ah, that's good to know. It just always bemuses me when software and hardware is coming out in 2014 that doesn't support it.
Why the fuck doesn't it support FLAC?
Obviously Valve doesn't want you to use a bloated music format and install more games.
Well its in open beta, so i guess if people start suggesting more file formats + API support for Spotify, Grooveshark etc that at one point they will consider it and add it.
I wonder why they don't make the steam overlay moddable. The possibilities would be endless.
Anyone elses steam music not playing any sound at all?
It seems to be affecting big picture mode as well. The noises it makes when you move around the interface are gone. :pwn:

Steam workshop for Steam overlay?
Yes please.
But for me steam overlay is already really sensitive to anything. It crashes easily.
Yea not using this until steam/overlay is drastically improved. More reliable to alt-tab at the moment.
Seems hotkeys work with it (albeit not configurable), but only if you've got the Steam window selected. Doesn't work ingame, even with the overlay on.
does it support midi files
how else am i suppose to listen to limp bizkit
I tried this program out a long time ago, but it was very glitchy and unreliable, and I'm pretty sure I couldn't get it to come up in the overlay either. Have they done lots of bugfixing in recent months? Are there any bugs or issues I should be aware of in the current release?
[editline]24th July 2014[/editline]
Also, how exactly do they get it to come up in the overlay, and would it be possible to do whatever they did to other programs like Skype or Spotify?
last.fm scrobble support or bust
I'll probably stick with Foobar anyway.
It should integrate with Spotify by just being a remote for the desktop app similar to the Facebook and Tumblr web app (when you embed it)
Would be nice if they fixed the fucking browser for the overlay as well, I can see this and the browser frequently crashing the overlay more than it should
I tried this and whenever I go to the music tab my steam crashes? It even starts crashing on startup as well so I had to completely re-install to get my steam working.
Anyone know a fix or something?

It's even an additional .exe process so, seriously, why not

Are you using a skin for the UI? Try using the default UI.
BTW, does the music player support .ogg files?

I was using a skin but going to default skin still made it crash
Does it work with Audiosurf?
I was using a skin but going to default skin still made it crash
Odd. Try deleting clientregistry.blob. If that dosen't work, re-install steam. (Make sure to back up your stuff!)

you can skin it
TBH I'll probably keep using fullscreen windowed mode and foobar2000.
valve aren't going to make steam a decent application any time soon so don't keep your hopes up
I'm going to stick with Clementine until steam searches through folders, cause I've got all my music in folders with a folder, rather than all of them in a single folder.

I am sure I heard mentions of Spotify when this was first mentioned. I cannot remember if it was an actual mention or someone poking around files.
I hope they add Spotify / Google Play support, that would literally make my fucking day. I've been with Google Play for a while and it's probably my favorite by a long shot.
If they add Spotify support I'll really get a lot of use out of this, though at the moment there's not much I can use it for since I don't save stuff locally anymore.
Still an awesome feature to see them add though
I've got thousands and thousands of MP3s, but I would really appreciate Spotify support because I use it when I want to discover new music or listen to songs that I don't own.
edit:
Seems I'm having trouble getting all of my iTunes music into it, it's only uploaded the ones that are MPEG/MP3. Does the player even support AAC?
edit 2:
Turns out it's just MP3s for now, so there goes about 3/4 of my library...
