I am asking FP because if you can sift out the dumb answers you can actually find some good advice. Here is my predicament. I have a 1997 pontiac grand prix. The exhaust valve on the 4th cylinder is out, and the transmission is bad. It is currently running but not for long. I need a car to get back and forth from school. Because of grants I get about $500 a month. (for living expenses and books.) Every mechanic Ive had look at my car has said "Its not worth fixing it, just junk it." I can get a used engine and transmission for about $3000. I have stumble upon this car. ** UPDATE ** I HAVE DECIDED TO NOT BUY THE ECLIPSE BUT HAVE STARTED LOOKING AT THIS ONE ***\/\/\/\/ "v-6 motor speed stick-nice insides nice radio.nice head liner-body is good -runs good -bads about it need cad to smog that $180-needs smog thats $32-tages are around $34 so everything is cheap no time got other cars -nice sport car for the money -around 200 or so its up and being a good car-!better hurry because it dirt cheap for what it is!miles 146,000 very low for a 95 year.******** or leave email people with cash only .no trades thks " I can get the cad for anywhere from $150 to $450. Plus installation, so about $600-ish for the cad and install. Should I get this car or wait untill april by then Ill have about $3500?
The selection for used cars increases in the summer a lot, so you might find something better if you wait until april.
do not buy rice shit
Keep looking. For 3000 you can get a pretty decent 2nd hand car. I'm currently in the process of buying a 1986 BMW 318i for 700 bucks. And it's in great shape.
i CANT stand the look of old cars. To me, no offense, but that is a fugly car.....imho. AND I hate hondas/toyotas.
That Eclipse is riced as hell. If you're looking to spend three grand, and that's your only choice, you'd be better off overhauling the driveline in your GP than buying that thing. If you find an Eclipse that isn't riced, go for it. They're decent cars. If I was looking for a small car, I'd probably look for something nimble, small and fun to drive. Also, it would be a car most ricers don't tend to gravitate tords. My personal pick would be a used Miata or Fiero.
Never get a pre-2000 Asian car. They are complete junk, same with American cars.
nah, doesnt look good. Shoulda been silver color or something

Id prefer it be a V6 with headers. [editline]12:12AM[/editline] I just noticed the thread is a "post your" when I selected "Help" just to let ya know mods. Also can anybody suggest a decent looking car, preferably a coupe thats kinda quick that I can get for $3000 or less? And the miatas and fiero....arnt my style...
Get like a 99 Accord or something. They are reliable, comfortable, safe, and have pretty good performance for a 4 or 6 cylinder. 1998 through 2002, starting in 2001 they added Side airbags.
Wait April. That thing is riced to hell and even if it is a Japanese car the "156xxx" miles are rather worrisome, especially with whatever aftermarket crapt he loaded onto it, which may or may not be shite.

We were going 70, someone cut us off and slammed on their brakes because they saw a cop. You cannot slow down in 10 feet.
I hate hondas with a passion. Got any other suggestions? Thx for the non retarded responses. I am proud of FP :buddy:

Almost anything except Honda, Toyota (except maybe MR2 or Celica), hyundai, Most VW, SAAB, and Buik. Everythings else (that I can think of) is fair game.
bump?

Don't buy American made cars! They're shockingly bad!
Don't buy American made cars! They're shockingly bad!
Is there something wrong with you?
Is there something wrong with you?
No, I'm just used to driving European cars. I've have the pleasure(?) of driving a Lincoln, a town car I think it was called? It was literally the worst car I've ever driven... Cheap, plastic interior. Ridiculously spongy suspension, no throttle response and I don't think the steering wheel was attached to the engine and the brakes were non-existant. Not to mention an engine that for a 4 litre should have had some serious power... Wasn't much faster than my 1.6 Vauxhall Corsa! Yes I realised Vauxhall are owned by GM but luckily they have retained the old-fashioned good British build quality. The majority of American cars are just petrol-drinking disposable cars, the build quality is rubbish.
well ya those cars suck. You need to drive our best cars before you say stuff like that. i.e. Chevy, ford, pontiac ect... I know people who have chevys from the 50's (with a little restoration) And the engine is still running. IMO lincolns suck. Also it depends on the car. not "American cars" I love pontiac. Every car from them (that Ive used) has run for a long time and had decent power. BUT their aztec was rated one of the worst cars of 2009. It was like the town car. cheap. It really depends on which car you look at.
Ok Ill stop bumping I just updated it and want some new opinions.

LAST BUMP. I am not bumping for more answers im bumping for new answers. Then The thread shall die. I am now looking at this car. ''1994" FORD MUSTANG GT GOOD CONDITIONS BODY IS IN GOOD SHAPE NEEDS MINIMUL CLEANING INSIDE AIR CONDITIONING WORKING ALL DMV PAPER WORK UP DATE ANY OTHER INFO CALL GONZALO " For $2300. I will probably paint it black or red. But my question is is this too much of a 'girl' car? The only reason im looking at it is because its a GT. I need your opinions. [tab]last bump i swear[/tab]
you should
It's not a girl car because it's a Mustang. But that automatic isn't exactly a manly thing either :p Seems like a good deal, tho. I also know for a fact that those cars are built like tanks. That Mustang is probably just as strong, if not stronger, than the F150 of the same year. My friend has a V6 5-speed 1995 Mustang. It still runs and drives. Here's a rough estimate of what he's hit with it in the three years I've known him: Over 100 ditchings Totalled an Oldsmobile Alero in a rearender. Only needed some steering linkage and sheet metal to repair. The Alero's left rear wheel was jammed halfway into the left rear door, the fuel tank crushed, exhaust fubarred, trunk destroyed, spare tire destroyed and I think the back window was cracked pretty badly. Not going anywhere. Another ditching where he hit something and tweaked the alignment. Nothing bent, but the K-member shifted somewhat, so now it pulls to the left. Ran into my utility trailer's tongue and put a hole in his then brand new bumper. This was just after he hit the Alero It's got 200K on it right now and it runs pretty good. The interior is shit, the nose is misaligned, but it runs good. Make sure you take care of that Mustang and you won't have any problems with it.
Ok cool. thanks for the help.
The mustang for sure
Mustang. No exceptions.
