I'm looking to buy an acoustic that's lived and been loved for a long time, and I don't really care about looks at all, I just want that nice vintage sound.
What would be some good places to look for this?
craigslist, ebay, garage sales.
look for hondo, harmony, and kawai. they're all very good brands that show up very often for a very reasonable price

These are the ones that immediately stood out to me on CL, especially the Gibson and Tailor.
Thoughts?
that gibson is a great guitar and is probably the best deal, but out of the bunch I'd take the hagstrom

I'm having a bit of trouble finding anything about the specific make of that guitar, and have never really heard of the brand before. Can you tell me more about it? Because their cite certainly doesn't make a very good argument http://www.hagstrom.org.uk/hagstrom_acoustics.htm
that's not their official site, just an old enthusiast run site from god knows how many years ago

Hagstrom is an old Swedish manufacturer, their older guitars are some of the best around. Those particular guitars were manufacturered by Bjarton and branded by Hagstrom for the North American market. Bjarton was an old boutique brand in Sweden that made fantastic stuff, but after around 1980 their quality took a huge dive and they went out of business.
Elvis played a Hagstrom, if that tells you anything about the quality. David Bowie played one too, Noel Redding owned a few, Pat Smear pretty much exclusively plays Hagstrom, and Cat Stevens played Hagstroms during nearly every live event.

Look up "Bjarton Isabella" for information on that specific guitar

Thanks for all the help, you've been extremely helpful.
I'm on the fence over either the gibson or the hagstrom.
edit: Wow, the tone is beautifully warm on the Hagstrom. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ymz4ddA5Ck
The hagstrom vanished and probably isn't coming back.
Looks like I'll be getting http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/msg/3964870657.html.
Anything in particular I should do to make sure I don't get fucked over?
Just make sure the truss rod still works, play a few notes and listen for rattling. Other than that it's business as usual for a craigslist deal.

Would asking him to meet at a local music shop and have them check it out before purchase be reasonable?
it couldn't hurt. I generally do prefer meeting people somewhere other than their house, it's always kind of awkward to be in an unfamiliar home.
Thanks for all the help, I ended up getting a beautiful martin for about 1200- It isn't exactly vintage, but has that wonderful "Alive" sound I was going for.
