From the sounds of it, the word "hacker" is being used for a buncha idiots just trying to brute force passwords. Keep trying fanatics. Maybe the password is devil, maybe it's satinhatesbabies.
Thousands of attempts? Sounds rather like a ddos to me, or someone just saw 1000 warnings and thought it were 1000 attackers. Most likely some script kiddie trying his new toys.
Or someone using brute force tried 10,000 passwords... Not really that impressive

I wouldn't be surprised if that was true.
