• Notch explains why Minecraft is not on STEAM
Given the nature of the world – and video games in general – you can only imagine that Notch has been asked fairly frequently why his uber-popular game Minecraft is not downloadable through Valve‘s uber-popular digital distribution system, Steam. While the head honcho at Mojang Specifications is well-versed in avoiding the questions, steering the conversation onto other topics or answering something that wasn’t actually asked, at PAX over the weekend, the Swede was asked straight out and forced to answer. …and the answer might surprise you: While he’s a huge fan (admitting to spending “incredible amounts of money” on the service), Notch simply explains that the current Steam set-up is simply too restrictive for his blocky, sandbox game. Being on Steam limits a lot of what we’re allowed to do with the game, and how we’re allowed to talk to our users. We (probably?) wouldn’t be able to, say, sell capes or have a map market place on minecraft.net that works with steam customers in a way that keeps Valve happy. It would effectively split the Minecraft community into two parts, where only some of the players can access all of the weird content we want to add to the game. We are talking to Valve about this, but I definitely understand their reasons for wanting to control their platform. There’s a certain inherent incompatibility between what we want to do and what they want to do. And there you go. “No big argument,” Notch explains on his blog, just a desire not to limit what Minecraft is capable of. Here’s hoping the two parties can figure something out, because it looks like Steam is the only distribution network we’re likely to see the game on, any time soon. Steam is awesome. Much more awesome than certain other digital distribution platforms that we would NOT want to release Minecraft on.
http://www.gamepron.com/news/2011/08/29/notch-explains-why-minecraft-is-not-on-steam/
Not worthy of being in this section IMO [editline]30th August 2011[/editline] Plus it's a day late :v:
Was there another thread posted already about it?
MAYBE BECAUSE NOTCH GETS NEARLY 100% OF THE PROFIT CURRENTLY. Is this shit not common knowledge or what?
There's really only one reason to put a game on Steam: exposure and advertising, which Minecraft definitely has enough of already.
Hopefully steam will open up to a new type of agreement that will accept games like Minecraft and maybe for less percentage due to its indie nature.
MAYBE BECAUSE NOTCH GETS NEARLY 100% OF THE PROFIT CURRENTLY. It's also not a full screen game, so you don't really need the overlay. Not only that, it's not a big download, it's also browser-optional, so you can't steamwork that, and it's got in-game updates. [editline]30th August 2011[/editline] Simply put, Steam adds nothing onto what minecraft has, nor any other sort of convinience.
MAYBE BECAUSE NOTCH GETS NEARLY 100% OF THE PROFIT CURRENTLY. Is this shit not common knowledge or what?
lol yeah no such thing as employees
lol yeah no such thing as employees
The one he has that actually works on Minecraft is jeb. The others just fuck around all day or work on Scrolls (A COMPLETELY ORIGINAL AND NEW IDEA).

Notch is too phat for steam.
There's really only one reason to put a game on Steam: exposure and advertising, which Minecraft definitely has enough of already.
What about pleasing the community?
What about pleasing the community?
Minecraft already has a community. And he's trying to please them by keeping away from a system that won't let him do the "weird stuff" he wants to do. Why do you need Steam to play a game that's already easy to access?

Most people I know who own Minecraft have added it to their steam list maunally so they get the overlay.
Not EVERYTHING needs to be on steam.
How is this sensational? The cult of Minecraft is getting a bit ridiculous. I'm a player myself but I don't obsess about Notch, creepers and other shit. Quite frankly, I kinda hate all the Minecraft pics in LMAO Pics thread. You have your own bloody subforum, jeez. Edit Ubelievable, no box bombardment by members of the cult. Good, very good.
Adding steam to it brings the community too (sort of) And what does FP think about the steam community (or most gaming communities)
Notch is too phat for steam.
But Gabe isn't? :v:
But Gabe isn't? :v:
Gabe IS Steam.
Not EVERYTHING needs to be on steam.
The fact people disagreed with you just makes it really pathetic.
The fact people disagreed with you just makes it really pathetic.
Especially because you can just add games as a non-steam game instead.
MAYBE BECAUSE NOTCH GETS NEARLY 100% OF THE PROFIT CURRENTLY. Is this shit not common knowledge or what?
Something like 50% of his profit goes to swedish taxes, and divide the rest up with himself and his crew, it's not as much as you make it out to be. It's a lot, but not as much as you think
Facepunch = Minecraft not on steam? Oh thats fine. WAIT WHAT! Battlefield 3 IS NOT ON STEAM!? *RAGES* I WONT BUY IT!
not really actually
Something like 50% of his profit goes to swedish taxes, and divide the rest up with himself and his crew, it's not as much as you make it out to be. It's a lot, but not as much as you think
Minecraft makes $350,000 per day (This is including paypal fees and tax), or a copy sold every 3 seconds.
you have no idea what you are talking about jesus christ people were pissed about bf3 because they were adding their own thing which you needed to open a browser to use
So make a origin account and install the plugin takes like 5 minutes of your life, worked fine in the alpha.
