The first Indian presence on the list is the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, ranked 222. IIT Delhi comes in second at 235 while those in Kanpur, Madras and Kharagpur are in the 300 range. Delhi University comes in the 420 to 430 band. Other Indian institutions that have made it to the rankings are Calcutta University, Benares Hindu University, Pune University, the Indian Institute of Science and Jawaharlal Nehru University. All the top 10 positions in the rankings list are taken by the U.S. and U.K.-based universities with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology retaining the first position for the second year running.
why would they call a newspaper "The Hindu"?
why would they call a newspaper "The Hindu"?
If your country's populace contained a significant number of that demographic, I'm sure you would Hindu it, too.
why would they call a newspaper "The Hindu"?
Well, it was originally started as a means of protesting against British discrimination of the local Indian population, so take a guess.

At first I was like "Hah, stupid Indians!" Then I looked up my own uni. 300-somethingth place. :c
To be honest the list doesn't really have anything to do with the quality if universities. I mean, look at this shit: [thumb]http://www.topuniversities.com/sites/qs.topuni/files/QS World University Rankings Methodology_0.jpg[/thumb] Don't want to say that the top unis aren't great places to study at, but the list is pretty biased. For example the fourth criteria: in most of Europe researches aren't done in universities but in other facilities, while in the USA and UK they are done in universities.
The Govt. set up a rankings committee apparently whose job is to place Indian institutes into proper perspective - like factoring in aspects peculiar to our country, such as the quota and donation systems.
Syddansk? Also, Denmark is wrecking this list compared to its population. Suck it Norway.
SDU Odense, yep. The two other major Danish unis are all up in the mid-100's, then SDU's all down low there. I mean, compared to the total count of 17.000 universities in the world, 300 ain't bad at all, but still, man.
Our universities range between the 150th and the 701st, quite meh, but man these get expensive after every government cut in there. Not that I went to University anyway. One of my quite business pals went to the UC Irvine BTW.

I'm confident that its position will improve over time. But yeah these lists should always be taken with a few buckets of salt. The top universities are obviously very nice to study at, I am sure, but there's plenty of great universities that are not topping the list.

As far as I remember you're doing social studies or whatever, right? I have two friends at Syddansk, one at applied mathematics and one in biotek. It's apparently a pretty cool place.

It's way cool, yeah, if you look away from the bunker-like concrete hallways that makes everything sound awful and looks depressing.

Personally, I am looking forward to the new Faculty of Swiss Cheese! [thumb] https://imgur.com/GyFi8sJ.jpg [/thumb]
Looks like 3 Israeli universities in the top 200. Out of the 7 we have, that's not bad. Of course the one I graduated from is in the other 4.
Not entirely surprising, considering how much focus Indian uni's in general place on rote learning as opposed to critical thinking.
Helsinki is Rank 67. Woooo.
The Govt. set up a rankings committee apparently whose job is to place Indian institutes into proper perspective - like factoring in aspects peculiar to our country, such as the quota and donation systems.
Man, fuck the quota system. It's been abused more than previously thought, considering its original intention.
At first I was like "Hah, stupid Indians!" Then I looked up my own uni. 300-somethingth place. :c
501-550 represent. Lists like these are always a bit pointless though. As long as the university provides you with a quality education, and gives you chances to further your knowledge in a set field it's fine enough. No fucking clue why international diversity matters though? And that's 10% of the grade, a bit whack.
Just checked mine and it dropped from 100th place to 120th :(
University rankings always make me feel inferior for not studying at a top 10 university.
University rankings always make me feel inferior for not studying at a top 10 university.
As long as you go to a reputable university where your qualification is actually recognized, I don't think it should matter where you studied. I know it does, but, people are dicks.
Helsinki is Rank 67. Woooo.
I didn't expect Aalto Uni to be at place 187, from the things I've heard that place is super prestigious. [editline]17th September 2014[/editline]
University rankings always make me feel inferior for not studying at a top 10 university.
I might be wrong, but I imagine this is much more severe in the US. Media kinda makes it look like if you didn't go to Harvard/Yale or any other "Ivy league" school, you're inferior.
University of Tartu is 379th, not bad.
As long as you go to a reputable university where your qualification is actually recognized, I don't think it should matter where you studied. I know it does, but, people are dicks.
In Germany most employers don't even really care about the university you went to, which is a good thing in my opinion. Here the whole fame and reputation thing doesn't exist, you go to the uni you think is best for you and that's it.
41 *puts on sunglasses*
Should probably be noted that a university outside of the 200 list doesn't imply that it sucks.
How hard is it to get applied to MIT? In this list it's pretty much the Top #1 University overall. God I'd like to study at MIT. This feeling of "regret" is hitting harder than it should.
Mine is 17th, fuck yeah.
