• PS4 developer: Sony mandates Vita Remote Play for all games
A trusted PlayStation 4 developer source with a proven track record for accuracy has told Digital Foundry that Sony has mandated Vita Remote Play for all upcoming PS4 games - except those that require the use of its bundled stereoscopic camera, the PS4 Eye.

It's all change for PlayStation 4, which features bespoke hardware video encoding for Remote Play, gameplay recording and screen-sharing support with all the benefits of the Gaikai streaming technology. It's a feature built into the operating system itself, incurring no performance penalty to developers. Up until now, the question has been to what extent publishers would want the feature enabled - conceivably, opening up a new library of software for Vita could steal sales from games designed for the system. The news that Sony is mandating support for all titles that don't require the camera takes the choice away from the publishers and ensures a level of consistency in the features that the majority of games offer.
Source
I'm okay with this, the PS3 and PSP could do that with some games.
I'm happy Sony's pushing this, there was only like 3 games for the PS3 which did remote play to the vita, one of which being God of War HD and that worked surprisingly well. If I'm gonna be able to play all my games on the toilet then even better.
more use outta my vita, can't complain
This is what Nintendo should have done with the Wii U.
This is what Nintendo should have done with the Wii U.
It doesn't work because the touch screen is not a 16:9 screen. Would probably be problematic as poop. Though the Virtual Console on the toilet is great.
Only if it works well. My only experience with Remote Play on my Vita is using it with Bionic Commando: Rearmed. the video quality was equal to 240p and the input lag made it impossible to play.
Finally another use for the Vita other than its highly rated paperweight mode.
As long as it isn't too hard to implement, this should be ok. Only real problem is that 1) the same UI doesn't necessarily work for both something small like a Vita, and a big-ass TV, and 2) Sony isn't known for being developer-friendly, so this could be a pain in the ass. Considering the screen on the Vita, and the GPU of the PS4, this honestly just sounds like a shittier version of Nvidia's Project Shield, but way cheaper, and free if you already have a Vita.
All right, that settles it. I'm definitely getting a PS4, if only to get extra mileage out of my Vita.
What will the bandwidth requirements be though?
I'm cool with this. I also hope this'll be cracked just like the PS3 equivalent, so I can "play" (stream) PS4 games on a pc.
What I always liked about my PS3 is that it was a GREAT media center like the xbox one is trying to be, but was also an amazing game system. I hope the PS4 impresses me more.
I was watching this the other day. I could lay down and play ps4 games.
Iirc, companies could port between ps3 games to vita no problem and in a very short bit of time even with the CELL crap they had to go through. (Dungeon Defenders only took 2 weeks for it to be ported from the ps3 to the vita) A little off topic for this point but this could be great for sony as devs wouldn't have too much difficulty for them to accomplish and sony would sell more vitas.
I don't understand what this is. Someone explain.
I don't understand what this is. Someone explain.
If you buy a game on your PS4, you can also install it on your vita, and if you turn off your PS4 you can just keep playing that very same session on vita. A few games have this with PS3-Vita and really it just allows you to play the game on whichever platform is most convenient for you, and switch to and from the console as you please, if I understand correctly.

The effective size is more or less identical.
More utility out of a Vita? Can't complain. Hell, if anything, this gives me something to add to my list of reasons to get one.

That is great seeing them doing this again, I hope this is a great success this time.

So your PS3 (and probably also PS4) can basically operate "headless" with the Vita serving as user input/output device.

Remote Play is more like the Wii U, the PS4/PS3 has to be on running the game, but it steams the audio and video the the Vita, and the Vita sends your inputs to the PS4/PS3. There was talk, I believe, that this generation using Sony's new steaming service to steam PS4/PS3 games to the vita (Presumably if you already own the game) eliminating the need for you to keep your PS4 on, but that's not what this announcement concerns. It's the same service Sony is offering to include some form of backwards compatibility for PS4.

I only have Persona 4: Golden for my Vita so I never really cared about whatever functions it had with the PS3
great, more gimmicks. you were doing so well sony [editline]30th May 2013[/editline] not to mention "buy a vita to win" models.
great, more gimmicks. you were doing so well sony [editline]30th May 2013[/editline] not to mention "buy a vita to win" models.
This seems quite clever to me, it could bring some life to the PSVita.
not to mention "buy a vita to win" models.
Please elaborate. It might be a gimmick, but what do you mean by "Buy a vita to win." You don't gain any advantage over other players, so I'm a bit confused. This is purely beneficial to owners of PS4/Vita and in not in anyway detrimental to those who don't.
Sony is trying really hard to outdo both their competitors in every way possible, I hope they keep doing this through the PS4's whole lifespan.
