In this skit they would display acts of domestic violence as satire to an audience that included not only students but parents, faculty, and various members of the media and community leaders. None of them stopped the skit. The story, published early Monday morning, has stirred up plenty of conversation in the Waverly community. Students and alumni have shown support and shame. But more often than not, the response seems to be defensive.

Apparently, this is not the first blackface sketch in Waverly — a village with a 97 percent white population, according to the 2010 census.
http://www.buzzfeed.com/jtes/students-alumni-defend-pep-rallys-chris-brown-ri this is wrong on so many levels
Ahh aahhh that would be such a cringe-filled thing to watch but actually who even cares, it's satire.
White dude dressing up as a nigger? Racism! (User was banned for this post ("Racist slurs" - Orkel))
WHo thought this would be a good idea for a skit?
Don't know why having domestic violence as a theme can be considered in good fun to anyone, let alone at a pep rally, where this shit shouldn't even be mentioned.
bunch of white people in a white school debating whether or not they offended black people.
Ahh aahhh that would be such a cringe-filled thing to watch but actually who even cares, it's satire.
because domestic violence is funny and appropriate for a school event
because domestic violence is funny and appropriate for a school event
Why wouldn't it be appropriate for a school event? Because it might upset someones prudish sensibilities?
Offensive? Perhaps -- I haven't seen the skit so I can't say. But racist just because they are, essentially, portraying black characters? Um, no.
I don't necessarily think there was anything offensive about it, but that is a very, very inappropriate skit for a high school pep rally...
White dude dressing up as a nigger? Racism!
politically correct statement of the year
blackface is so last century
Why wouldn't it be appropriate for a school event? Because it might upset someones prudish sensibilities?
do you by chance attend this school
do you by chance attend this school
I don't like the idea of "appropriate for school". School is meant for exploring ideas, not just upholding some standard of sensibility.
I wouldn't necessarily say this is racist, but it is offensive. Personally, if I had to take a guess on this, I'd say that any race that isn't white is considered a sort of novelty in that town that's 97% white. In other words, they probably just thought that portraying black people and/or celebrities would be funny or cool, without actually thinking this shit through. I mean, they're blatantly stupid to have actually went through with this without considering how it might be offensive to anyone, but I think their own ignorance was what actually caused this.
I don't like the idea of "appropriate for school". School is meant for exploring ideas, not just upholding some standard of sensibility.
Yeah, you shouldn't be making fun of domestic violence in front of kids at a school. That doesn't exactly push the right message out. Besides, no one would allow for skit about murder just because it was "exploring ideas" on education.
Why wouldn't it be appropriate for a school event? Because it might upset someones prudish sensibilities?
"You don't like domestic violence? You're a prude!"
"You don't like domestic violence? You're a prude!"
Because the sketch was clearly advocating domestic violence, and not satirizing it or anything. Part of the reason domestic violence goes unreported as much as it does is because of the taboo against discussing it.
"You don't like domestic violence? You're a prude!"
If you are unable to discuss things like domestic violence without being offended then you probably are a prude, or are incredibly immature. I thought school was supposed to be about learning, not indoctrination and conformity to societal norms.
-snip- totally misread that
If you are unable to discuss things like domestic violence without being offended then you probably are a prude, or are incredibly immature. [editline]16th October 2012[/editline] Why the fuck not? I thought school was supposed to be about learning, not indoctrination and conformity to societal norms.
Lemme just say where there's a problem with that. First off, satirizing and making fun of something as serious as domestic violence towards kids at such a young age will most likely desensitize them towards the issue, making it seem miniscule in comparison to how big it really is. This isn't about being a free individual and finding your own path in school, it's about presenting something you shouldn't to people that are supposed to be shown that there's seriousness in certain things in society. Making fun of it isn't going to help that attitude at all, not even in the least. Yes, school is about learning, but it's also about being learning to be thoughtful to things other people may be offended by. If someone's offended by something like this, then they probably have a reason. Let's say a kid saw his dad beating his mom or something like that and he was offended by this skit. Would be immature or a prude for feeling that way? No, not at all. It would be completely in the right. Anyway, this is all just some stupid shit that they shouldn't have even considered doing.
Why the fuck not? I thought school was supposed to be about learning, not indoctrination and conformity to societal norms.
School is about learning. A skit that makes fun of domestic violence doesn't bring light to the topic, it makes it seem funny and less harmful than it really is. That doesn't teach anyone anything. [editline]16th October 2012[/editline] Wow, three posts saying the same fucking thing :v:
Because the sketch was clearly advocating domestic violence, and not satirizing it or anything. Are you suggesting satirizing domestic violence would work against the taboo? Satirizing domestic violence would actually make the taboo stronger if anything.
Its not like people are actually being abused in this skit. Stop being so testy
Oh wow you're right that makes it completely okay (and it's still not weird to you that this was a skit for a high school pep rally?)
Ahh aahhh that would be such a cringe-filled thing to watch but actually who even cares, it's satire.
"FREEZE! STOP STABBING THAT CITIZEN!" "But officer, it's a satirical depiction of murder!" "Oh, right. Carry on, then."
It looks like everyone discussing this is white... [sp]on twitter etc[/sp]
Its not like people are actually being abused in this skit. Stop being so testy
Haha, what if I faked raping someone that's be funny right guys ~~edgy~~
It looks like everyone discussing this is white... [sp]on twitter etc[/sp]
I wasn't aware only black people have valid opinions on this.
First off, satirizing and making fun of something as serious as domestic violence towards kids at such a young age will most likely desensitize them towards the issue, making it seem miniscule in comparison to how big it really is.
Why do you believe someone who sees a satirical depiction of domestic violence would be somehow desensitized to the issue? The domestic violence doesn't even seem to be the focal point of the message, even though it is definitely one of the areas the most offense stems from. It seems to be making fun of the idea of a celebrity like Chris Brown, shown to be a completely horrible person yet still accepted by society as a person of importance. Even if it was simply making fun of domestic violence, you would be assuming that your audience is a bunch of retarded lemmings to say that they would be swayed towards a complete desensitization towards an issue simply because they saw some kids portray it one time.
This isn't about being a free individual and finding your own path in school, it's about presenting something you shouldn't to people that are supposed to be shown that there's seriousness in certain things in society.
If there is any place to discuss the seriousness of domestic violence, it is in a place like school. School is society, because the future members are trained there. By keeping a hush-hush attitude about the issue because it's "too serious" you are just hiding the issue.
Making fun of it isn't going to help that attitude at all, not even in the least. Yes, school is about learning, but it's also about being learning to be thoughtful to things other people may be offended by.
Yea, by discussing how these things are offensive. Everyone is offended by something, so we need to bring to light what is offensive and why it is offensive with open dialogue. When you say that people shouldn't say something because "someone will be offended" in an authoritative fashion, you keep these things offensive. You tell people that they should be offended, with no idea why.
If someone's offended by something like this, then they probably have a reason. Let's say a kid saw his dad beating his mom or something like that and he was offended by this skit. Would be immature or a prude for feeling that way? No, not at all. I'm not saying the skit is good, or that the skit isn't offensive, I'm saying it shouldn't be censored because otherwise people will never know why it's offensive.
