A California deputy accidentally shot himself while trying to kill a dog that he said was threatening his life on Wednesday, but video captured by a local television station later showed the animal much smaller than reported and peacefully playing with children. According to a Riverside County sheriff’s spokesperson, the deputy was serving an eviction notice at around 2 p.m. on Wednesday when a “large” dog tried to attack him, KCAL reported. “He’s OK. He has non life-threatening injuries.” Munoz said that the dog’s aggressive behavior ended when it was startled by the gunfire. Animal Services did not take the dog into custody because there was no evidence it or the owner had done anything wrong.
http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/04/17/calif-tv-station-films-dog-calmly-playing-with-kids-after-cop-shoots-himself-trying-to-kill-it/
The officer is more of a threat to himself than the dog is.
Apparently it was barking at him, I guess he got scared and reacted violently.

Good. Cops who kill innocent dogs are scum and pussies. I understand shooting in certain situations, but a tazer is a better alternative imo.

doesn't the gun realize that bodily assault on an officer is a hefty crime with jailtime? that's a felony, gun [editline]18th April 2014[/editline] but yeah like others say; why aren't tazers used more in these types of scenarios ?
Good. Cops who kill innocent dogs are scum and pussies. I understand shooting in certain situations, but a tazer is a better alternative imo.
CAN'T TAKE RISKS. MUST KILL.

It sucks how much pit bulls get a bad rap. They're genuinely very sweet, docile dogs when raised properly.
you only get one shot with a tazer, it's easy to argue against it in the case of defending yourself, which is necessary at times. also I wouldn't call the dog large, but pitbulls are pretty solidly built.
With luck like that, I'm surprised the bullet didn't just turn right around and climb back into the gun.
To be fair, dogs can be extremely dangerous and unpredictable. It's hard to tell if they're about to attack and a lot of the people police deal with don't bother to train them properly if at all. I definitely don't envy anyone who has to deal with making these sort of decisions.

I dont think i could ever bring myself to shoot any animal unless i was certain it was literally seconds from mauling me. I know there is the risk of underestimating the danger until its too late, but id rather get bitten once or twice by a genuinely dangerous animal before firing than kill a dog that didn't do any thing wrong.

If i was a cop, Id never shoot a dog, ever. Id rather receive a few scratches or bites than take an innocent animals life, nor risk mentally harming the children or owner.
Yet another shining example of california police failure.
Because Police only fail in California.
Apparently it was barking at him, I guess he got scared and reacted violently.
I guess he's never seen a dog before. They bark. It's what they do.

Should've tased himself instead, disgusting brutality.
Because Police only fail in California.
Yes, they fail elsewhere too. But they fail especially in California.
When the article said "he's okay" I for some reason thought they were talking about the dog.
Yes, they fail elsewhere too. But they fail especially in California.
California cops are assholes. I've learned this through personal experience.
