Plans to close BBC Three and move it online in January 2016 have been approved by the BBC Trust.
The trust set several conditions, including a commitment from BBC One and Two to broadcast more BBC Three programmes aimed at 16-34 year olds.
It rejected proposals for a new BBC One+1 channel, which it said would be at the expense of commercial rivals.
The trust also agreed to CBBC's running time being extended by two hours, running until 21:00.
This follows a decline in viewers on CBBC in the last four years.
They could show adult swim on CBBC with the extended late night time :)
Calm down!
This is a good development. BBC were always at the forefront of entertainment tech. They need to get a foothold on online based content. Where better to start than a youth aimed channel?
Shit, now where am I going to watch endless reruns of Family Guy?
no shows of any actual interest were lost.
Although BBC three has created some gems in the past, I'm not that sorry to see it go. Out of all the BBC channels this is the one I'd most prefer to access online - BBC4 deserves to be on TV much more with the quality of its content and target audience.

It's been moved to BBC Two
it was shit anyway tbh
It's been moved to BBC Two
Thank goodness.
The hip young audience that BBC 3 caters for hardly watches TV these days and gets most of their content online, so it takes the content right to them.

It was 50/50, there was either some pretty good comedy programs, or documentaries about chavs doing various things.

The documentaries were just Stacey Dooley walking into a place that was obviously going to be a bit upsetting (like a crack den) and getting very upset.
The way the BBC have gone about doing this is pretty shitty, by making the plans very public before they even had approval they ensured that no one would produce quality programming for BBC Three for the last year or so, ensuring that it will be easy to close.
I look forward to it going online only though, so much room for them to actually be experimental.
Gotta question the wisdom of extending CBBC till 9 in the evening though. Its a channel aimed at 7-12 year olds, surely they should be in bed at that time??

To be fair I thought her documentaries were going to be shit (and maybe the first few were) but I am starting to warm to them very slowly. I think its because of the way that she is genuinely experiencing things.
I think the best thing I saw on BBC3 was Two Pints, nothing worth watching on it now

"Middle class woman explores the world and realises some places can be a bit horrible compared to the nice area she's from in England"
I enjoyed Stacey Dooley and Billie JD Porter documentaries and also BBC Free Speech wasn't too bad for a youth debate show. Not sure what will happen to those, maybe shown on BBC1/2?
British television sounds fascinating, what with how the BBC has four channels. Or is it five? Heck, 'not private' channels (don't know what to call them) barely go by with one channel over here.

stop being cynical, it shows bad conditions to other ignorant people who dont realize the world can be shitty
stop being cynical, it shows bad conditions to other ignorant people who dont realize the world can be shitty
Yeah I do realise that.
It's usually that interviewers and documentary presenters often know about the stuff they're researching or at least do it in a composed and mature manner (eg louis theroux), where as she often is extremely patronising to people she considers 'bad guys' such as drug dealers, mayors of towns with large problems, criminals etc with little consideration about HOW different the culuture they live in is, and treats them in line with the morals we hold in the UK (even though most of them are only doing it to survive because they're so poor). I recall she actually was almost telling off a spanish mayor in one of her docs because of the amount of overly drunk english people who visited there and saying it's his fault it's so bad (ignoring the fact english people are going abroad and being horribly disrespectful to his town).
Just don't like the way she seems like shes talking down to everyone in her shows.
BBC3 broadcasted a lot of shit i won't even try and say it didnt. But it also produced this magnificent documentary.

Simply saying, it was a shit channel anyway is just flat out wrong on all accounts and i suggest you watch it.
Then there was Ideal, Being Human, Torchwood. heck a lot of decent shows started on BBC3 over the years and I'll be sad to see it go, well move to I-player.
"There can only BBC one!"

forefront of entertainment tech my ass, iplayer still doesn't do actual HD, and it's transcoding is absolutely laughable, it buffers a shitload especially on platforms like Virgin Media boxes

our war pic
This is honestly probably the best modern war documentary available to watch. Hard hitting and amazingly insightful. I only hope BBC3 going online will mean more of their experimental shows (like boosh, ideal, edgy docs) because there's not as much as an issue about ratings
Uncle and Bad Education were great shows. IIRC they made Mighty Boosh too, didn't they?
Was BBC Three like a cross of Adult Swim and MTV?
