Show me some songs that could make digging a ditch, ripping up tile flooring, taking a shit, or microwaving bagel bites the most intense thing you've ever done. I'll add to OP as songs are posted. Upbeat Globus - Europa given example E.S Posthumus - Pompeii suggested by Godlybomb Craig Armstrong - Escape suggested by Godlybomb Pirates of the Caribbean Theme Song suggested by me Emotional Adagio for Strings suggested by SKuM
Also Sprach Zarathustra and Ride of the Valkyries are mandatory.
The ending crescendo is just incredible, if you don't give out a mandatory Indian tear, you're a heartless bastard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRMz8fKkG2g
And since I bring up Holst, here's Mars, because it's overplayed: I love the part from 2:45 to the end on this one: The emotion in this prelude is just awesome. Very metaphoric, if you care to listen to the next five hours of the opera. The first few bars are some of the most famous measures in music: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tristan_chord Get some awesome speakers, a decent recording, and blast this shit: An awesome ballet, Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé. A lot of great music in there. This part depicts a sunrise, birds going across the morning sky, and some other junk: Standard fare, but fucking awesome. Unfortunately, there is no longer a good recording (Salonen) on Youtube, so you have to deal with Antal Dorati (normally one of my favorite conductors) rushing this one: Saw the LA Phil perform this one. It kicked ass. Those descending fifths were a big influence on a recent string quartet that I wrote:
Almondmirage, while that is an interesting orchestral list you have there, they differ from the type of pieces I was looking asking for. Notice the example I gave, the songs should be more upbeat, fast, and movie-worthy which are different than more traditional orchestral pieces like the ones you suggested.
I didn't listen to the examples in the OP since I'm in class, but I hope that this song matches what you're looking for. God is an Astronaut - Suicide by Star
E.S Posthumus - Pompeii Craig Armstrong - Escape I'm assuming this is what you're looking for. Epic enough to make anything you do epic. For example, If you take a shit and it drops just as the crescendo kicks in to Escape, it feels like you just saved the world.

Also, plenty of films model their music off of Wagner's operas.

I actually know about most of those pieces, they're certainly hard to miss. Just feels like modern orchestral pieces have changed from their predecessors.
