A famous Seoul dog meat restaurant is closing, reflecting the state of a trade that is neither legal nor explicitly banned in South Korea.
For more than 30 years, chef and restaurant owner Oh Keum-il built her expertise in cooking one traditional South Korean delicacy: dog meat.
In her twenties, Oh travelled around South Korea to learn dog meat recipes from each region.
During a period of South Korean reconciliation with North Korea early last decade, she went to Pyongyang as part of a business delegation and tasted a dozen different dog dishes, from dog stew to dog taffy, all served lavishly at the Koryo, one of the North's best hotels.
She adapted famous dishes to include dog meat, replacing beef with dog in South Korea's signature meat and rice dish bibimbap.
But the 58-year-old's lifelong experience with a food eaten for centuries in Korea is about to become history.
Daegyo, the famous dog meat restaurant she opened in a Seoul alley in 1981, will serve its last bowl of boshintang, or dog stew, on Friday, a reflection of the challenges facing a trade that is neither legal nor explicitly banned under South Korean laws governing livestock and food processing.
I don't see anything wrong with eating dog meat as long as the dogs are raised and slaughtered humanely.
I'd eat dog if it was put in front of me. I don't see what's unethical about eating dog vs. any other kind of meat, other than the conditions common to dog-breeding for food. Outside of those conditions, I think it's hypocritical to say it's ethical to eat cows and chickens but not dogs.
I've heard it's not very good though, so it's not something I'm eager to try, but would if given the opportunity

Also I <3 korean food
I'm too much of a dog friend to ever eat dog, but I still eat every other meat we consider normal.
As my dad has told me: It tastes like lamb.
As my dad has told me: It tastes like lamb.
oh my god I love lamb
oh hey I can read part of the signs in the background!
I can't really agree with killing any felines/canines for food
reflecting the state of a trade that is neither legal nor explicitly banned in South Korea.
What does this even mean? If it's not banned then it's legal.
In my mind, dogs are fair game. Meat is meat. Why does it give some people trouble eating horses and digs and such when they'll happily eat lambs or calves? Even rabbits aren't commonly eaten. As long as they're treated and killed humanely, i've got no problem.

I'd imagine it's because people have spent forever raising dogs as part of their families. Eventually it just became sort of a taboo idea to eat dogs. It's kind of like cutting up and eating your grandma, and although I have no problem with this, most people would just feel weird doing it.
It's a bit more unethical to eat dogs in my opinion, since they have been bred by humans for hundreds of thousands of years to be useful companion dogs, that are far more capable than either cows or chickens or something. They also are one of the few animals to understand human emotions.
Actually a little shocked that a lot of you have no problem with this :(
Unless they eat wild dog or something, which have evolved seperately
If someone fed me dog meat and didn't tell me until afterwards, I'd fucking kill them
If someone fed me dog meat and didn't tell me until afterwards, I'd fucking kill them
Who's to say they haven't already?

I don't know about you but I wouldn't eat dig.

I understand your uncomfortable feeling, but I'm somewhat ok with this.
I think it's mainly culture of a country. If that country somehow live in area that don't have a lot of pig, cow or other usual food animal but have a lot of dog instead. The people may have to eat it. As time go on, It will became their culture.
Still, I don't want to eat dog though.
I don't know about you but I wouldn't eat dig.
How would you even eat dig anyway?

I'm sure most species of dogs are not more intelligent than pigs though.
I'd totally eat dog meat.
The only animals I wouldn't be comfortable eating would be the more intelligent ones (like apes I guess) and endangered species.

Same with horses, yet most people don't seem to have a problem eating them.
The dish itself ain't that bad, had it while I was growing up in Korea. Keep in mind that I was 7 and my dad ordered the dish for me to try without letting me know until after I'd ate it. I was heartily sad face, thinking that I'd ate someone else's dog.
Still delicious, though.

That's true, but on the flip side you could say that horses are companion animals we've bred for thousands of years as mounts. The only problem i have with dog is that it's not very efficient. Not a lot of meat. Pigs are remarkably intelligent too you know. Ancient peoples wouldn't have a problem eating their dogs if it meant death, if it makes you feel better.

you should post your gun collection again so we know you're serious
I like dogs to much to eat them, despite realizing there's little difference from other meats as far as ethics go. Honestly, the only taboo meat I'm interested in eating is probably dolphin.
Not eating dog is one of those few hypocrisies I keep close to my heart.
It's kind of like cutting up and eating your grandma, and although I have no problem with this, most people would just feel weird doing it.
Y-You sick fuck!
My Korean aunt calls my dog "Soup" when she comes to visit.
how much meat can you get from a dog honestly doesn't really seem worth it
Too me it's wrong to eat a dog. I mean, if it was survival situation, then yeah I would eat a dog to preserve myself. But many including myself associate dogs with being friendly family pets.

You realize that cows and chickens have been bred by us for nearly as long, in some cases longer than dogs, right?
They have been bred to be tasty.

Well no shit, I think you missed this important part of his post,
"been bred by humans for hundreds of thousands of years to be useful companions"
Nobody raises chickens or cows for companionship, I think you knew this already but still decided to post in an effort to make someone else look dumb.
I really hate users like this
