• Torrentz.eu shuts down, bids the internet farewell

The legendary torrent search engine appears to have shut its doors, leaving two messages on its homepage for visitors: Although no online news sites have reported this, all searches redirect to the homepage and even valid links will send the user to the homepage. R.I.P. Torrentz, you were an incredible useful website
I bet this has something to do with the KAT shutdown. The piracy world is already caving in on itself and I blame our fucking government 100%.
If they do manage to shut down all the major sites, you know what will happen ? People will start selling pirated CDs and DVDs again. It will be the return of the physical media :v:
Just tried accessing Torrentz.eu a few hours ago and it gave me the danish "blocked under fair share laws" page, guessing it got blocked around the world and things escalated quickly from there.
thats a bummer torrentz could seemingly find anything
I give it about... 72 hours until a clone appears.
thats a bummer torrentz could seemingly find anything
There were certain Russian Linux communities with exotic distros it didn't index.
I feel that whatever happens rutracker.org will stay up no matter what
I actually found that TPB would have a lot of stuff torrentz wouldn't pick up.
To be honest I won't miss it, Sure it was charming to login and check out comments one had made 10 years ago, but it could never find any of the juicy stuff, only kinda "user verified" stuff.

When we still had piracy, adblockers, database thefts, government leaks. I'm gonna be a badass hacker for using youtube-mp3.org while I still can :yarr:
I feel that whatever happens rutracker.org will stay up no matter what
Rutracker is probably the best public one tbh
Eh in Denmark we're only DNS blocked, so you can just use Googles DNS server to access all blocked sites. Torrentz became crap anyways, filled with ads/false search hits.
Another one bites the dust. Anywhere else that's good for finding Linux Distros?

Might as well get the official thing instead of trusting some idiot to put a good release on the disc
Who in their right mind is going to pay for pirated stuff. Crazy nonsense. I even have a collection of some bootleg shit from the early 90's that I've found in thrift stores for like $1.
Who in their right mind is going to pay for pirated stuff. Crazy nonsense.
Who in their right mind is going to pay for pirated stuff. Crazy nonsense. Might as well get the official thing instead of trusting some idiot to put a good release on the disc
Bootleg can massively undercut retail prices on something that can be infinitely copied. For a modern example look at places like Cuba where barely anybody has internet, so groups of people formed markets where they'd distribute pirated copies of media they pirate using hotel wifi connections they steal access from as they drive around. It's like physical Netflix where you pay them a service fee. IIRC these groups service like over 90% of the populace in many areas or something crazy like that. You can put in a request for a show or movie or whatever and they'll just download it for you. Every week families get an HDD delivered to their doorstep with all the latest entertainment you could ever want. VICE did an episode covering this on their HBO show, S4 Ep7. It's really interesting.
I mean that's a good thing imo
I disagree. It'd be a good thing if the actual main causes for piracy were being addressed and causing piracy sites to flounder and shut down. That however is not the case. Piracy sites shutting down like this only serves to help corporations make more money and nothing more than that.

If anything more people will learn how to use TOR or other such networks to pirate stuff if situation becomes that dire.
Damn, torrentz was always my third choice when both TPB and KAT were down. RIP.

If they're on a bigger label, there's a good chance that they're getting just barely a few cents if that on song purchases. Most important to me is that on a lot of sites, you can find a bunch of different versions of albums released at different times and at various qualities. Deluxe editions with bonus demo tracks, for instance, can be hard to come by for certain bands.
Deluxe editions with bonus demo tracks, for instance, can be hard to come by for certain bands.
This is the kind of stuff that annoys me, there's a song for Random Access Memories that you actually can not get anywhere except Japan unless you import a Japanese copy of the album. That some of the shit that is wrong with the industry as well as most labels paying the musicians nothing and keeping everything for themselves.
What other decent torrent trackers do we have left?
Google
I mean that's a good thing imo
well you're wrong How are you going to find games that are not in production any longer? There's so many classic games that you literally cannot get legally anywhere anymore, and with the advent of online only DRM there's going to be a whole new generation of games like that. And then there's all the places where even certain current games (and movies and music and other things) cannot be acquired legally. Piracy helps preserve history. Trying to shut down piracy is like locking down a museum, throwing away the key and setting it on fire. It's also a force of competition with distributors, encouraging them to actually improve their platforms and practices because consumers actually have an alternative if they really want to avoid you. It means even distributors with exclusive rights don't have a complete monopoly.
Who in their right mind is going to pay for pirated stuff. Crazy nonsense. Might as well get the official thing instead of trusting some idiot to put a good release on the disc
You are either being sarcastic or too young to know all this. Back in the day pirated copies of video games or movies would sell for 4€ or less mostly in Internet Caffes, some multi CD/DVD releases would be more expensive. And often you didn't get just the CD/DVD. In better shops you would get a DVD case with official box art, even a colored print on the CD, plus full instructions how to install the game and crack it, plus you could always call and get support if you needed it. And most important of all: IT WAS THE ONLY WAY TO ACTUALLY BUY A GAME OR A MOVIE in most places. Shops selling original copies simply never existed. When high speed internet came in around 2005-2007, many people switched to torrents and stuff, plus people started playing online from their home, so these shops closed. Many also started to use Steam and other online services simply because it is more convenient and prices are competitive.
