• Using Mac Floppies on a PC?
    4 replies, posted
I recently found a USB floppy drive at a garage sale. The woman there had no clue what it was so she let us take it for free (we got some good deals there) and I decided to try to fire up some old floppies from my basement. My problem is that these floppies were all formatted for Macintosh. All software I've found so far that can bypass this issue seems to require payment or is very sketchy. Is there any way to read Mac floppies on a Windows 7 PC without going to scary websites?
The easiest way would be to use a 68k Macintosh emulator like basilisk II, though you'd need a Mac ROM (IE. dumping the ROM from a real Macintosh) to run it. There are probably a few places left to download a Mac ROM, but it isn't legal unless you actually own a Mac. Virtualbox supports MacOS. use that, if you want. The formatting is a read-only, from what I could tell from my mothers iMac. I couldn't transfer from the external to the new computer she got because it's Windows. Apple made it's own format because, let's face it, they're Macintosh. They do what they want. Try the Virtualbox idea and see where that leaves you.

It can only run the later versions of Mac OS X (10.4 and onwards) which doesn't support legacy 68k and PowerPC applications.
http://superuser.com/questions/318394/service-for-retrieving-data-from-old-macintosh-floppies just hook it up to virtualbox running a linux distro, or failing that use dd for windows and mount the image in virtualbox
