ST. PAUL, Minn. — MSNBC rejected a TV ad calling for a boycott of Target Corp. after the retail giant made a political donation in Minnesota, continuing the controversy over corporate involvement in elections.
MSNBC spokeswoman Alana Russo said Thursday that the commercial submitted by the liberal advocacy group MoveOn.org violates its advertising policy by attacking an individual business directly. The ad features Target's bullseye logo and accuses the chain of trying to buy elections.
MoveOn executive director Justin Ruben said the rejection was "the height of hypocrisy" and accused MSNBC and its corporate parent, General Electric Co., of trying to protect Target from consumer anger.
MoveOn spokeswoman Ilyse Hogue said the ad began running Thursday on ABC, CBS and NBC affiliates in the Twin Cities. KSTP, the ABC affiliate, and WCCO, the CBS affiliate, confirmed that the ad had started airing, while the NBC station, KARE, didn't respond immediately to a message.
MoveOn originally planned to spend $35,000 on the ad, including national air time on MSNBC. Hogue said the group hasn't decided what to do with the money it planned to spend on the MSNBC slots.
Minneapolis-based Target triggered a national backlash by giving $150,000 last month to a business-oriented political fund supporting conservative Minnesota GOP gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer, who opposes gay marriage and other rights for same-sex couples.
Gay rights groups and liberals have protested at Target's stores and headquarters. The flap showed the risks for businesses that take advantage of new freedom to spend company money directly on political campaigns after a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling.
According to republicans, freedom means freedom for large corporations to do whatever the fuck they want. Fuck the people, fuck their rights, large corporations are where it's at.

Just look for people are people by depeche mode
Corporations are people too, man!
we hate when the conservatives push their beliefs on us so why should liberals be treated differently?

This hasn't turned into a liberal-conservative argument yet, so keep your political standing in your pants.
Thing is, advocating freedom means freedom for large corporations as well. If you restricted their rights, it really wouldn't be freedom, would it?
I don't see why the ad shouldn't have aired, Target's exercising their freedom by donating to what they chose, and MoveOn's exercising their freedom by taking Target to task.

Corporations aren't people.

Watch the documentary, The Corporation. The entity we know as a corporation came to fruition during the introduction of the 14th amendment. Corporations use the 14th amendment to gain status as a person. This allows them to reap the freedoms of people - the ability to sue, etc. Really corporations don't care about people - they care about the bottom line, money.

I hope you like a nationalized economy.
Corporations aren't people.
Actually, legally, yes they are.
Corporations aren't people.
Neither is a car.
A single person doesn't normally have millions upon millions at their disposal, a extremely large workforce, and the political weight to shift elections either for one particular purpose.

"Nationalized economy"
Seriously, you can't just toss a buzzword out like that without elaborating. It goes against FAMILY VALUES
I would rather prefer my economy to be open to corporations, and have them not on a leash to the government. That is the point of capitalism, to be able to make money through your own way.
All the people who think corporations are bad are the "fight the system" kind of people.
Corporations shouldn't be free to do whatever they want nor should they be regulated to the point of near total government control.
Wait, since when was it pronounced Targè?

They're a private channel, they can air what they want.

So they should be free and they shouldn't be free at the same time.
The Jungle is a good book if you want to see what happens when corporations are not controlled.
So wait, the Supreme Court ruled to allow individual corporate entities to donate directly to political campaigns, yet most advertising agencies would forbid commercials calling said entity out on their donations, despite the fact that political attack ads on individual politicians usually go on and on about a candidate's donation record?
O America.

Either way, they should not be able to influence the government through massive monetary contributions.
I agree with the sentiment, but this commercial is kind of lame.
Nobody should because technically that is a bribe.

Uberman said something that doesn't tow the Republican party line, I'm fucking impressed dude.

I am completely oblivious as to how the ability of a corporation to donate money to a political campaign infringes upon the rights of citizens
I am completely oblivious as to how the ability of a corporation to donate money to a political campaign infringes upon the rights of citizens
Because it puts them in a position of influence greater than that of any individual citizen.

Yeah seriously. He also said "Fuck Israel". I'm proud.
