• Google Code shutting down
When we started the Google Code project hosting service in 2006, the world of project hosting was limited. We were worried about reliability and stagnation, so we took action by giving the open source community another option to choose from. Since then, we’ve seen a wide variety of better project hosting services such as GitHub and Bitbucket bloom. Many projects moved away from Google Code to those other systems. To meet developers where they are, we ourselves migrated nearly a thousand of our own open source projects from Google Code to GitHub.
Source

Nooooooooo They better just archive it all for 2 years, let people access but not update, that way people can grab their shit
Nooooooooo They better just archive it all for 2 years, let people access but not update, that way people can grab their shit

We will be shutting down Google Code over the coming months. Starting today, the site will no longer accept new projects, but will remain functionally unchanged until August 2015. After that, project data will be read-only. Early next year, the site will shut down, but project data will be available for download in an archive format.
In the email they sent me. Sounds like they'll keep the stuff for a while.
So that's why they added the "Export to github" button. I already was wondering why they support their rival sites :v:
The problem is dead links and people who either forgot their Google Code projects or don't care they're going down.
I seriously read this comment just yesterday: http://www.reddit.com/r/GraphicsProgramming/comments/2yqjvf/is_google_developing_its_own_graphics_api/cpcba7f
does this mean android and chromium and the like will be moved to github/bitbucket
does this mean android and chromium and the like will be moved to github/bitbucket
Knowing google. We will probably see something pop up again under a totally different name just like google code from them. Since they seem to love to start random projects then shut them down some years later. Another one for the graveyard :v: http://www.wordstream.com/blog/ws/2013/06/27/discontinued-google-products-services

Seeing as everyone seems to like Github right now I don't see why they would.

Plot twist: Google is buying github ?
I'm starting to see the "forgotten century" now. So much of the stuff we make is stored on private companies' servers, and when they decide to close up shop thousands of bits of work vanish because nobody thought to download or archive it.
See ya Google Code, you had your place and I had a good run with you personally, but times have changed and GitHub is better now. Thanks for everything.
