CORPUS CHRISTI – You've never seen an Easter egg hunt like the one that Bay Area Fellowship, the largest church in Corpus Christi, is planning at its Easter services this week.
THE ULTIMATE GIVEAWAY
The church plans to give away several million dollars worth of prizes, including flat-screen televisions, skateboards, guitars, furniture and 15 cars, all used but with low mileage. The church has also raised donations for 15,000 gift bags, each with about $300 worth of free goods and services.
SOME CRITICISM EXPECTED
Lead Pastor Bil Cornelius, who asked for donations during services two weeks ago, said he hopes the prizes will help Bay Area lure some people who don't normally go to church or those who have lapsed in their faith. He said he expects some criticism of the plan: "We know it's unconventional. We know some people of faith aren't going to agree with it."
BIG CROWDS
Bay Area leaders expect more than double their normal weekly attendance – between 15,000 and 20,000 people – for Easter services. One car will be given away at each of the main campus services and one at each of the church's satellite locations in Kingsville, Calallen, San Marcos and Alice.

Something tells me Jesus wouldn't approve.
What if they spent all that money helping the poor and needy?
I'd still go for a shot at that E36.
People who don't normally go to church are going to show up in hopes of winning something and then never return. Maybe they'll be nice and make it a point to watch their new TV or drive their new car on Sundays.
This goes against Christianity in so many levels.
Oh hey, it's American Capitalist Individualism. Giving Americans a reason to go to church since the early 1900's.

The only way they can keep people interested is by giving shit out.
This is what Easter is. Free stuff day.

I thought it was celebrate zombie jesus day with obligatory capitalist overtones featuring a bunny.
Yes. We celebrate with free stuff. Usually in the form of chocolate bunnies that have some vague connection with some tradition back when Easter was first created!

Just like a fat old pedophile with a beard trespassing by means of crawling down your chimney and eating your food while leaving you presents, somehow has to do with jesus birthday.
Yeah, and now they've been commercialized, like shown above!
That's some underhanded trickery if you ask me.
And a huge waste of money.
And low, Jesus doth said unto the throng, 'thou shalt have pimp rides, and they shall be most fly'.

The day Christmas is set on isn't even when he was born so meh.
Lawl, this is what they have to do for people to show up and pretend they believe their bullshit?
Give me an Audi and I'll say a prayer or two
Fuck I wish I lived in Texas. My father is a Catholic radical :crying:
I'll believe in whatever god you want me to for a new car
wait wait wait i swear there is a post about american churches being in massive debt ... *facepalm*
Remember when people donated money to charity instead of giving rich people more cars? That was nice.

You're just sad that the church makes more than your PUNY COMMUNIST COUNTRY in a year.

First thought I had.
I would protest so hard against this if they were wasting my church taxes for this bullshit.
Ha, my parents' church did something like this (on a smaller scale) on the opening day, giving away a laptop and an ipod and some gift certificates, and advertising it. It did boost membership for the week, but none of them really came back.

Did you have to bring communism into this? Regardless i guess it's a good idea but they've gone overboard with the prizes.
