Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead's invitation comes two days ahead of Burns Night, when suppers are held in honour of poet Robert Burns. Imported haggis was banned by the US because its food standards agency prohibits sheep lungs in food products. Mr Lochhead raised the issue with the US last year but said he was still hopeful that imports would resume. Traditional Scottish haggis, which is made with a sheep's heart, liver and lungs, had faced a double barrier after America's ban on offal in the wake of the BSE outbreak in 1989. However, the US ban on British meat products has since been relaxed. Mr Lochhead said the US was a "potentially lucrative market" that could be worth "millions" to Scottish haggis producers. He added: "We want to capitalise on the diaspora of Scots in the US and many of them would enjoy the opportunity to indulge in authentic Scottish haggis to accompany their neeps and tatties on Burns night. "Scotland's produce is amongst the best in the world and I've asked US Department of Agriculture officials to come here to see for themselves the high standards we have in animal health and processing. Scottish minister wants the US to reverse its ban on haggis "This will help them realise that our haggis is produced to the highest standards and that it's time to allow imports to resume." Edinburgh-based haggis producers, Macsween, said the impact of any decision to reverse the US ban would be enormous. Director Jo Macsween added: "In our experience, American visitors love our haggis when they taste it while in Scotland and it would be lovely if they could not only be permitted to take some home with them at the end of their stay here, but purchase it in America too. "Of course, we would love to do business in America as we know we have so many fans there."
Because I'm sure they will love it over there!
I don't mind it, but i also won't eat it. Maybe I'm just being sheepish.
Why was it banned in the 1st place...?
OH GOD I FUCKING LOVE HAGGIS Oh gosh it's so fucking tasty

No Sheep Lungs. What an oddly specific rule.
No Sheep Lungs. What an oddly specific rule.
No Offal isn't all that specific, just happens to include lungs Basically in 1987 cows were fed ground up bits of other cows for food. Some cows in the UK gone ker-azy (so did the people that ate them) and so everyone fucking freaked and bought chicken nuggets. The US forgot to un-ban some things later, one could argue to help home agriculture industries
Delicious delicious haggis. Great in whisky sauce and flattened into a burger shape then put on a burger bun with a home made burger. Fuckin love me some Wallace burgers.
I've never tried haggis, but I would definitely buy some. Really it's just like Scrapple but more sheep and less pig. If you're from Maryland or Pennsylvania you'll know what I'm talking about.
I respect the Scottish and their contributions to society and such but haggis looks fucking disgusting.
mmmmm
Is this for all offal, or just products from the UK?
Iceland has a similar product, Slátur and it tastes fucking good. I think I'll try haggis sometime.
I respect the Scottish and their contributions to society and such but haggis looks fucking disgusting.
it may look like shit but by god it tastes like sex
It actually taste really good.
It's the best thing ever, lung is just meat
I had a battered haggis when I went to deepest, darkest Skye. It's quite nice.
I'm surprised at all the people who like Haggis, that's really cool. Burn's Night on Tuesday, so I think we (my family) are having it then.
i'm sorry for you. hope you get through it alive!!
It's delicious and and so is single malt whisky. Shame I'll only have Vodka on Burns night :saddowns:
It sounds and looks rough. If you can eat something like that more power to you I suppose. I hate foods blended or mixed together, I'd much rather have foods separate on the plate than mixed together in a lung sack, that's more of a weird psychological thing with me though.
It's like a dry meaty porridge and it's motherfucking delicious
haggis is bloody amazing! it looks awful but seriously, taste it if you havent.
I remember an episode of Johnny Bravo where he tried to eat a haggis but when he found out about the contents inside, he gave it to the loch ness monster.
Haggis is tasty. America just doesn't want another mashed up animal offal product coming into the country because it will threaten the burgers since haggis is so tasty.
