if this is true I'll be destroyed. I'm a lifetime fan of Maxis, they pretty much got me into gaming. If they betray the fans in such a way...

Maxis don't really have much to do with it. It's EA.
If this is true then they've either been misled(like the insider seems to believe) or they've been bullshitting all of their fans just to keep the DRM in the game.
In other news, pandas eat bamboo.
Maxis don't really have much to do with it. It's EA.
But they're outright lying about it in order to justify EA's stupidity.
"oh the simulation happens server-side its a design choice we made"
I would have NO problem whatsoever if they would just outright say it's DRM. Ok sucks, but at least I know it's EA's decision, not theirs.

Maxis would have their asses kicked if they said EA forced them to say it.

I mean, if from the beginning, they said that the always-online was for DRM purposes only.
EA has been making Maxis be the PR for the whole situation in order to save their shareprices, so they can be like SEE IT WAS MAXIS NOT US.
Maxis don't really have much to do with it. It's EA.
Maxis is probably lying for EA, I'm my eyes Maxis is just as guilty for this bullshit, they lied to us.
Couldn't it be possible - just a little bit possible - that maybe this is actually Maxis's fault? No one's perfect, it's not like Maxis is immune to mistakes and EA does everything wrong.
This has been known for a couple days now? You can unplug your computer from the internet and you'll keep playing the game and saving locally just fine for like, ten minutes, at which point the game will boot you off. If you log in again within those 10 minutes it'll upload the local save to their servers, too.
Now I'm pretty fucking sure there's no simulation data that takes up to 10 minutes to refresh, so yeah, it really isn't a core part of the game.

I'd say half and half. EA probably forced the direction on them, and it's Maxis's fault for marketing it as if it was essential, acting as if the internet isn't a super bizarre and investigative audience.
Isn't maxis no more anyway and all in EA now? It's just a name?
Hahaha, I fucking knew it. No matter how much EA (or Maxis at EA's direction) lies and spins it, this is always-on DRM, and they don't want to give that up. I cannot wait for the crack to hit TPB so everyone sees once and for all how full of shit they are.
God damn, when was the last time any company was this patronizing, dishonest, and insulting to it's customers for their own greedy self-interest?
I want this game so bad
but I refuse to buy it with this bullshit going on

Maxis is EA, Maxis was mostly wiped before SC3 released, fixed it up and finished it.

I have a copy of SimEarth in the big box. It was on a couple floppy disks, the 3 1/4 inch ones, and they had a form to mail in if you needed the 5 1/2 inch floppy disks. And now they're making it harder for customers to play their games.
I just remembered this and made myself upset by what corporatism can do.

I think that was established back when they released Spore.
This was known in beta when people were playing the game just fine without being connected to the servers.
I wish I could play this game without it raping my bandwidth

Yeah, but it proves they are full of shit since the beginning and the game doesn't need the servers at all except the fancy nancy stuff people would gladly give up to be able to stably play, offline.
The whole scheme is just a sugar coated DRM. Nothing more.
These groundbreaking online features are a fancy wrapper around the always online DRM, so people wouldn't complain so much.

Of course Maxis is responsible for many of the problems. It'd be rather naive to blame EA for everything. Maxis are after all the developers.
What on earth was wrong with the way games used to work?. surely all this bullshit DRM stuff just makes life overly complicated and causes more trouble than its worth.

That's some tolerance. No internet, no data or communication what so ever? 10 to 20 minute grace period. Which you can play just fine with until the game's hard coded limit kicks you off. So why is internet required at all. To babysit you and make sure you're playing legitimately
I think that was established back when they released Spore.
They handled Spore very well, with Will Wright actually coming out and announcing publicly before the release that fans shouldn't get their hopes too high as they had to cut a bunch of functionality that they'd been planning because it didn't work well design-wise
