I still struggle to believe that people actually vote for an avowed communist. And I'm not saying this as in the joke that the Greens are commies, I mean she was a literal member of the communist party, a tankie, and she's never disavowed it.

She most likely got to the top of the Greens Senate ticket in NSW due to name recognition during the preselection process, but of course, the article mentions that the state of the NSW Greens' democratic processes leave much to be desired. Of course by being at the very top of the ticket, she was guaranteed to be elected as very few people vote below-the-line.
