Chernyshenko made the statement after an incident during which the Olympic flame was briefly extinguished as it was carried through the Kremlin in the opening stage of the nationwide relay. The flame went out in the hands of Shavarsh Karapetyan, a famous Soviet era swimmer, shortly after President Vladimir Putin took part in a televized ceremony marking the arrival of the flame in Russia. When Karapetyan began beckoning for help, it was relit with a cigarette lighter by an official standing nearby.
http://en.ria.ru/russia/20131006/183976159/Russia-Olympic-Chief-Dismisses-Kremlin-Torch-Mishap.html
MOSCOW — The first time the Olympic flame died out was amusing — that was Sunday at the Kremlin, when a plainclothes officer relit it with a cigarette lighter. But then on Monday, a second torch flickered out, threatening national embarrassment. A torchbearer taking part in the Olympic relay through Moscow on Monday afternoon was jogging along Raushskaya Embankment, on the other side of the river from the Kremlin, when his flame was extinguished, according to reports on TV Rain and amateur videos.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/russias-olympic-torch-flames-out-again/2013/10/07/04198cba-2f5f-11e3-9ddd-bdd3022f66ee_story.html
Extinguished as it was carried through the Kremlin. There is some symbolism there.
Good thing there are a lot of smokers in Russia, finding a light for that olympic torch won't be difficult.
The torch looks more stupid every year :(
And again, lighting olympic torch with a lighter kinda defeats the purpose.

wow that jacket. it's a good thing it says 2014 on his back or i'd mistake this for 1988 footage
This should be enough of a sign that these games are gonna be cursed. God I hope they're gonna be cursed.
I thought they had to light it from the official source? Otherwise technically it's not the Olympic flame.
There is a King of the Hill episode that is relevant to this. I suggest watching it for those who haven't seen it.
wow that jacket. it's a good thing it says 2014 on his back or i'd mistake this for 1988 footage
I expected the torch relay to be a bit more majestic.
By the time it reaches the destination it would probably have been lit by a dozen random russians on the street with a lighter.
Well, I dont know how someones gonna swim across the atlantic without the fire going out, but good luck
The torch looks more stupid every year :(
Christ, it looks like something out of Soul Calibur.
There is a King of the Hill episode that is relevant to this. I suggest watching it for those who haven't seen it.
yet the torch was relit by Dale's Cigarette which there was lit by the Olympic flame
Looks like they could use some flaming homosexuals right now
This should be enough of a sign that these games are gonna be cursed. God I hope they're gonna be cursed.
You do realize that the olympic torch goes out during the relay on nearly every single olympic games, right? It went out several times during the 2010 olympic games, the 2012 london olympic relay it went out a few times etc. etc. people are just acting as if it's a sign that the russians are shitty when it honestly happens all the time
yet the torch was relit by Dale's Cigarette which there was lit by the Olympic flame
Geeze, way to spoil the plot. :v:
I thought they were supposed to have backup torches in case this sort of thing happened?
Obviously the solution here is a white-hot chunk of metal in the top of it with a wick-like material to make a visible flame. Try putting that out.
maybe it's the design or something idk feel bad for the people holding it when it went out, though "yay my time to shine OH NO"
It is not uncommon for the Olympic flame to be accidentally or deliberately extinguished during the course of the relay, and on at least one occasion the cauldron itself has gone out during the Games. To guard against this eventuality, multiple copies of the flame are transported with the relay or maintained in backup locations. When a torch goes out, it is re-lit (or another torch is lit) from one of the backup sources. Thus, the fires contained in the torches and Olympic cauldrons all trace a common lineage back to the same Olympia lighting ceremony.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympic_flame It happens all the time, they have backups, they'll probably relight it with the backup when it actually arrives. [sp]yeah I used wikipedia as a source, screw you my high school teachers[/sp]
wow that jacket. it's a good thing it says 2014 on his back or i'd mistake this for 1988 footage
Reminds me of the old ski suits.
Yeah guys, funny and stuff, but after noticing the article I surveyed the issue just in spite and it is really common. NINJA
The ancient Hellenic spirits of the games are going to wreak horrible revenge for banning the most revered of ancient Greek sports, homosexuality.
Extinguished as it was carried through the Kremlin. There is some symbolism there.
It's haunted.
