Soon afterwards, I found a warning about the page saying it was fake. That warning was circulated by the Stop Mod Reposts campaign. It is attempting to stop popular mods being hijacked by conmen, virus writers and cyber-thieves. It maintains a long, long list of the scam pages offering re-packaged mods. It even makes an extension for web browsers that warns when you stray on to a dodgy site.
that's pretty awesome
It isn't mentioned in the article, but there is also a thing that advertises a "free" download of Minecraft. It happens to be a download for the actual Minecraft client with a shitload of malware thrown in. The kicker is you still need to pay whatever Minecraft's price is in your region as while you got the client free, you still can't actually play it. I only know about it thanks to the magic of GPT and Sandboxie.
that's pretty awesome
It's always good to see something being done to protect people from fakes. Modding Nexus lets you run every mod through VirusTotal.
Well, minecraft players are mostly kids, and kids are pretty gullible, so it makes sense I guess. That's good on the mods for what they're doing though.
