• What equipment for music making/mixing?

So, I play the electric guitar and all, but I wanted to try my hand at mixing music and doing dance/electronic/and so on music. What would I need? Was thinking of buying a laptop but I don't know how strong of a laptop I would need, and what kind of equipment I would need like a mixing console and what not. [editline]18th February 2012[/editline] Oh, I also have an old ass Realistic Stereo Mixing Console, I probably can't do much with that though.
A computer of some description and a DAW of some description.

I'm not sure about that, I know lots of DJ's use ableton live but that's about all my knowledge of that.
I would go with Ableton live, i used fl studio for a couple years then i switched to Ableton because it was way simpler to automate my tracks. You might also want to get TAL-NoiseMaker vst, its free on their website and a super powerful synth. Mastering on ableton is quite simple. You just have to create your track around -12 dB drums so you can hear clearly and master later.
a computer, a tiny £20 midi keyboard (because trying to make melodies with a mouse makes my head hurt sideways) and a DAW of your choice
So what are mixing consoles or those other stuff with bunch of sliders and knobs for exactly then, just being flashy? Or they're necessary for something else? I take it something like a Novation Launchpad is similar to a midi keyboard?
http://www.korg.co.uk/products/software_controllers/microkey/sc_microkey.php i use this, you dont really need a controller unless you have loads of hardware/a deck setup or two

With switch boards and mixers etc its always better to use them because they make music simpler with the program you have because you can assign nobs to different midi maps of any vst or nob within the program. Some mixers like Kontakt are very useful because of the sampling system.

A midi keyboard is cool, if you play piano you might want to get a slightly bigger one. The launchpad is okay, just a bunch of buttons in the end. It's not very useful in the studio, but it's awesome live.
I'm interested in the hardware and money isn't a problem, if so what should I be looking for, any suggestions? I'll download FL Studio and probably Ableton live and try out both, I'll also get get Audacity, I'll probably use my Guitar for sounds to work with too and probably will get a mic for the vocals. I'll look into a midi keyboard, anything else I could get? I'd basically like a complete set to make some good music making and live mixing.

BUT like i said get the Tal-noisemaker. It is free and powerful. Also, there are more free Tal vst's that are great.
