Hey I was wondering if you can help me out with picking a laptop for college. I just want something that is decent, can play most games, Source mainly.
Price tag below 1000. Thanks for any help I just don't want to buy a Dell or Alienware as I hear they tend to be a bit of a rip off.
Cheers.
Actually, During the start of the academic year, Dell and HP have furious price wars both retail and on the internet. So don't totally rule them out, you might be surprised what comes up.
Don't forget searching some sites for voucher codes too...
Not saying you can't get better elsewhere but I got a damn good deal on my Studio 1555, I ordered it just after college started and got £150 knocked off and a free coloured lid.
My dad has a Studio 17, and it plays Source games quite well! But if you find anything do let me know mate.
This is the best newegg has to offer in that price range, there was a GTX 260M which is a bit better graphics wise, but it's paired with a Core2Duo and that's too big a step back in CPU performance to justify a 750 dollar laptop.
This is the model that several friends have bought for college and they love it.

I got a Dell Studio 15 this time last year for £600 with some voucher codes and discounts, was supposed to be about £1150 with all of the upgrades I got and it's great, if you're in the uk, keep an eye out on hotukdeals.co.uk
Dell only rinse out their average consumers. Check out the 'business' offerings.
The Vostro series are basically the Studio series in black for £50-£100 less.
1000 what? If pounds get a cheap £100 netbook and build your own computer for £900 if dollars or Euros just go for a reasonable laptop.

Sure that's not because the "business" pages are Exc. Vat + Shipping, whereas the "Home" pages are Inc. Vat + Shipping?
When I add on the Vat and shipping the price difference is almost nothing.
Can anybody show me a laptop that rivals the Dell studio 17 for cheaper?
The Sony VAIO aren't bad.
What would be a good Sony Vaio? I was looking at the CW series, they seem pretty good for not too much a steep price. It is around 899 for one, and I might be able to get it discounted to 810.
Is there any other laptop that would do the same for cheaper?
Oh god no anything but dell is good. Or Alienware.
If possible get a good desktop and a laptop suitable for word processing
Someone needs to make a laptop megathread already, with different laptops for different situations.
