Following a weekend New York Times feature that depicted an often harsh and unforgiving workplace culture at tech giant Amazon, CEO Jeff Bezos has responded in a memo to employees.
Bezos encourages staffers to read the Times piece but states, "The article doesn't describe the Amazon I know or the caring Amazonians I work with every day." He later writes that "anyone working in a company that really is like the one described in the NYT would be crazy to stay."
The Times article, which cited more than 100 current and former employees, describes a wildly successful but ruthless company where workers are encouraged to report each other to supervisors for transgressions such as "inflexibility and openly complaining about minor tasks."
According to the article, employees are expected to answer emails well into the night and workers crying at their desks is not an uncommon sight. One former worker says Amazon fosters a culture that prioritizes the success of the company above all else.
On the flip side, there's this... :v:
I worked at an Amazon warehouse (UK) for quite awhile and it wasn't as bad as the news makes it out, it's an extremely clean facility and generally people were very nice to eachother, except for some cunt that stole my kitkat from the vending machine but they made him buy me another. At the least the place has far-far higher standards than alot of the warehouses and factories I've ever worked at.
EDIT: I think the real reason alot of people keep shit slinging Amazon's way is because you are expected to work extremely hard for minimum wage, at least in the warehouse, you can't have a moment to yourself and you have to have a good reason as to why you've paused for a few minutes, where as jobs such as office work you generally get paid more, can have trips to the coffee machine regularly and don't have to work every second of every minute without pause like you're expected to at Amazon.
I misread that. I thought that photo was from a new event where they're unveiling a new Fire Phone. i was about to say, fucking hell, that dream should be over.
From my understanding, its mostly if the person was a direct hire or indirect hire. If you're employed directly through amazon you typically receive much better treatment, but if you were hired by a hiring firm that gets you the job for amazon, you're much more subjected to abuse. That as well as what was mentioned above. These places are like assembly lines where each person has one job and they have to do it as fast as they can, so if youre not picking up your slack and work is backing up by even a slight amount you're causing a massive headache for everybody else in the facility.

From what I have read in regards to their warehouses is that they all vary by location. Some are run like sweatshops whereas others are more caring for their employees. There is one certainty among them and that would be the fact that they treat employees from staffing and temp agencies like absolute shit. Now that's not all on Amazon because while temp and staffing agencies are somewhat of a good thing to at least get you working, they're remarkably horrible because their employees are paid less across the board compared to employees that were hired directly by Amazon. A new Amazon warehouse is opening up by Chicago and they're hiring for $14 an hour at the moment so only some warehouses employ people at minimum wage. I guess the main rule is that if the job is easy enough that anyone with no experience can come off the street and do it effectively then it's most certainly going to be a minimum wage job.
No one is talking about the warehouse staff here. They're talking about the HQ staff, the ones who work on creating and implementing company-wide projects.

Actually no, a pretty good amount to nearly most of the complaints from ex staffers were from warehouse workers. This response is concerning all of the complaints, both from warehouse workers and corporate workers.

But the NYT article was about corporate staff.
Worked for them. Treated like cattle. Got a back injury and even with a sick note they fired me. They argued technically they didn't because I was indirect hire. I found out I was fired by my security card not working. On the first day they laughed and told us they can fire us just as easy as they hired us. UK warehouse. Pricks.
