Syrian army troops have killed 175 opposition fighters, many of them linked to al-Qaeda-linked groups, in an ambush described as one of the deadliest attacks by government forces near Damascus, according to state media.
An opposition group alleged that Wednesday dawn's ambush was carried out by the Lebanese Hezbollah group, which has been instrumental in helping President Bashar al-Assad's regime push back rebels entrenched in the suburbs of the Syrian capital.
Syrian state news agency SANA quoted a field commander in the Eastern Ghouta area as saying most of the rebels killed in the assault near Oteibah lake, southeast of Damascus, belonged to the al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front.
The report claimed several of those killed were foreign fighters who came to Syria from Saudi Arabia, Chechnya and Qatar.
The agency posted several photographs on its website showing dozens of bodies of men, some with leg wounds, lying in a dirt track of an open field.
Some were wearing fatigues, but most wore civilian clothes and appeared to have been carrying bags of clothes and bottles of water that were scattered on the ground.
Activists told Al Jazeera the fighters were killed while trying to cross from the eastern side of Damascus to Adra, north of the city, using "a risky road" because of an ongoing government siege.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 152 opposition fighters were killed, most of them Nusra Front and other fighters from allied brigades.
Reinforcing that report, Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV aired exclusive footage of what it said was the ambush, showing at least two large bombs that were detonated along the route used by the opposition fighters.
An army colonel told the Lebanon-based Al-Mayadeen channel that his troops acted on intelligence and the rebels lost "more than 150 men".
Syria's pro-government Al-Ikhbariya channel aired its own footage of the aftermath, showing soldiers milling about as dozens of bodies of rebels lay scattered on the ground.
The station also broadcast images of what it said were rebels' weapons, confiscated by the army.
This is overkill
Well, if these were all truly Al-Qaeda, then fuck yeah. If not, well.
Honestly I'm not sad to see Islamists blown up. At the same time, the Syrian army is raping and murdering civilians by the thousands. So I can't sympathize with either side.
What's worse is the faction I'm rooting for, the FSA has ties to these Islamist groups, despite being secular militias, so in a nutshell this war is looking grimmer by the minute. If the Syrian Army wins -which is looking like what's gonna happen, then there's going to be brutal reprisals by the government. That's obvious, and that's no good period. Frankly I honestly have sympathy for the Syrians.
I wouldn't root for the FSA. They (although moderate in ideals) have activley supported and given aid to terrorist groups. I'm not saying Assad is much better. I'm saying that neither side is good to agree with.
this is probably the best ambush ever pulled off, everything was perfect.
FSA is a fucking joke and most of the strength is in the fucking eight Islamic Fronts.
Good on the Syrian army slaughtering the Islamist. I hope we all know my motto. "Fuck Wahabis"
Well that's efficiency.
I saw some pretty brutal pictures on /k/ about this awhile back ago, actually. I'm not to sure if it was the same thing.
A lot of the people killed where apparently foreign fighters and such.
I don't believe the civilian thing, even the rebel group that got hit admits it was just them dying.
Also there's video of them at the site soon after walking around and everyone has Lebanese accents :v:
Take a guess who helped with the ambush.

The Islamist's have been invading Lebanon. It'd only make sense that the two neighbors are sharing resources against a mutual threat.

Not saying this is definite proof that many of them were civilians, but what if they were?
In either case I find it disturbing that you guys applaud the loss of 175 lives.
Wow. 175 Terrorists being killed did not disturb me at all.

Yes. They are insurgents.
175 brains that will never think again; gone in less than the blink of an eye...
Even if they were part of a terrorist faction with absurd ideologies, that's still something pretty powerful to ponder on.

Wouldnt that actually be:

I´m so sorry.
Massacre!
175 monsters killed with one blow!
+75,000 XP
I somehow doubt that they all were terrorists
In killing those people, think about the potential innocent lives saved.
Hey if they were linked to those scum bag 16th century savage animals with guns, then there's no more beautiful a sight. If they were insurgents I'd feel a little bad, but if they were foreign fighters then fuckin' bravo
I'm impressed at how perfectly it was laid out. And how stupid they are to travel in such a perfect and tight line

These people had to be all at least eighteen years old.. Eighteen years of learning, comprehending, working around problems, making memories and having personal experiences, all to get to this point where you're just walking across a field when your brain matter is shredded apart, every instance of your mind is obliterated in a fraction of a second.
I showed this to a Syrian friend of mine, and according to him it turned out that these were people the regime had executed and put there.
I realllllly fucking doubt they were all Al-Qaeda, i really do

You are definitely on the same wavelength as me there.

so you don't root for your own government, then?
