Clearly, he missed the "Thou shall not kill" part.A Georgia father, sentenced Wednesday to 18 years for murdering his 5-month-old son, used a biblical verse to defend the fatal beating, the WSB-TV reports.
Benjamin Edetanlen said he was acting on the old adage, “Spare the rod, spoil the child."
Assistant District Attorney Dalia Racine argued that Edetanlen used similar force on his other children, a 2-year-old daughter and a 1-year-old son.
"The defendant stated that he disciplined the children according to the book of Proverbs in the bible," Racine said, according to Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Though his son died from blunt force trauma, suffering brain injuries and a broken leg, Edentanlen's attorney maintained the defendant's faith in the passage.
“Mr. Edetanlen firmly believed in the adage, you know, spare the rod and spoil the child,” defense attorney Ingrid McGaughey said.
Edetanlen initially faced a murder charge, but instead pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and child cruelty.
18 years? that's 82 years too few.
I only just got the meaning behind "Spare the rod, spoil the child". I always took it as saying "It's better to spoil your child than beat the fuck out of him with a big stick".

Thats what i thought it meant, anyway georgia is full of weirdo bible beating people. Kinda scary that people like this still exists.
Nope, religion does no harm and anyone saying otherwise is part of the fp bias.
Since when does not sparing the rod imply beating your child to fucking death. When it says rod, it doesn't mean a fucking iron rod, it means a switch, which is not somethign that'd result in lethal blunt force trauma (see caning)

are you being sarcastic? because religion didn't kill this kid

shut up
Nope, religion does no harm and anyone saying otherwise is part of the fp bias.
why is it even necessary to go there?
Nope, religion does no harm and anyone saying otherwise is part of the fp bias.
This is more someone (purposefully?) misinterpeting what it says, or using it as an excuse.
I only just got the meaning behind "Spare the rod, spoil the child". I always took it as saying "It's better to spoil your child than beat the fuck out of him with a big stick".
Basically means if you don't punish your child when they misbehave, they're going to grow up thinking said misbehaviour is alright and become a terrible person forit, this comes from back when corporal punishment was common (however, corporal punish, ment doesn't mean beating someone to fucking death)
Nope, religion does no harm and anyone saying otherwise is part of the fp bias.
The father is the idiot, not the bible.
Nope, religion does no harm and anyone saying otherwise is part of the fp bias.
And guns also kill people.

if someone uses "catcher in the rye" to justify killing someone do you blame the book?
18 years? that's 82 years too few.
He probably lived in the bible belt. But I think it's enough anyway, considering that most prisoners aren't huge fans of people who kill children.
you don't blame mcdonalds for people for becoming fat fucks
so you shouldn't blame the bible completely for this killing
the guy is crazy
I only just got the meaning behind "Spare the rod, spoil the child". I always took it as saying "It's better to spoil your child than beat the fuck out of him with a big stick".
More easily understood as: If you spare the punishment, you spoil the child.
if someone uses "catcher in the rye" to justify killing someone do you blame the book?
The difference is that the Bible is an instructional text. Sure, the dad being a psychopath is the main cause of all of this, but the passage justifies it for him and other people who beat their children. There's no point in blaming Christianity though, since the religion is a lot more than the book, but I don't think its a stretch to say that using the Bible as a moral guidebook is dangerous.

I always thought that meant if you don't use your dick properly, you'll fuck up chances of pregnancy.
are you being sarcastic? because religion didn't kill this kid
It sure did. It's what it was made for. Asserting control and murdering without good reason. Shit used to fly well with the church way back. Still does in America and Middle-East. Epicentres of shit in the world.

is Catcher in the rye a manual in proper behavior AKA How to not piss off my figment of imagination.
if someone uses "catcher in the rye" to justify killing someone do you blame the book?
Well, they got it banned once. Maybe the same can happen to religious books.
if someone uses "catcher in the rye" to justify killing someone do you blame the book?
Is "Catcher in the Rye" a book that claims divine inspiration and infallibility? Is "Catcher in the Rye" a book that provides literal, brutal instructions on how to interact with other human beings?

I'm sure you could find someone who'd claim it did. And it does give some pretty bad examples of how to treat others.
Clearly, he missed the "Thou shall not kill" part
Most translations translate it as "murder". The King James version is a bag of dicks.
Killing is okay, and endorsed, by the bible under certain circumstances. Murder does indeed differ from simple killing, and the distinction is particularly important in regards to the ten commandments.
Obviously the guy who beat his kid to death was just looking for an excuse and was likely batshit crazy to begin with. Not that I absolve Christianity of all the blame; it is hard to recognize the early warning signs of someone who is violently crazy when they all spew crazy bullshit.
That's ridiculous. There's nothing a 5-month old could do to warrant a beating.
What a cunt.
if someone uses "catcher in the rye" to justify killing someone do you blame the book?
Those deaf-mutes have had it way too easy.
Jesus christ, how hard would you need to strike somebody with a bible passage to kill them?
And guns also kill people.
Except for the fact that nobody ever debated that.
And guns also kill people.
Oh and calculators make wrong equations.
Except for the fact that nobody ever debated that.
Actually it's very debated. I own guns and they've never killed anyone. Plenty of delicious animals though.
