Fifty years after the approval of an extremely effective vaccine against measles, one of the world’s most contagious diseases, the virus still poses a threat to domestic and global health security.
On an average day, 430 children – 18 every hour – die of measles worldwide. In 2011, there were an estimated 158,000 measles deaths.
...
People infected abroad continue to spark outbreaks among pockets of unvaccinated people, including infants and young children. It is still a serious illness: 1 in 5 children with measles is hospitalized. Usually there are about 60 cases per year, but 2013 saw a spike in American communities – some 175 cases and counting – virtually all linked to people who brought the infection home after foreign travel.
“A measles outbreak anywhere is a risk everywhere,” said CDC Director Tom Frieden, M.D., M.P.H. “The steady arrival of measles in the United States is a constant reminder that deadly diseases are testing our health security every day. Someday, it won’t be only measles at the international arrival gate; so, detecting diseases before they arrive is a wise investment in U.S. health security.
The Bad Astronomer weighs in (it's an opinion piece but he gives some good sources so I'm quoting that part):
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention just announced that measles cases in the United States in 2013 tripled over the annual average. There were 175 cases (so far), when usually there are about 60.
Why?
Well, let’s see. In March, there were 58 cases alone in Brooklyn, N.Y., tied to a Jewish community that refused or delayed vaccinations. In Texas, a megachurch that preached anti-vaccination views had an outbreak with at least 20 cases. In North Carolina, 23 cases were reported in one outbreak; most of them in a religious (Hare Krishna) community that was largely unvaccinated.
In all three of these outbreaks, someone who had not been vaccinated traveled overseas and brought the disease back with them, which then spread due to low vaccination rates in their communities. It's unclear how much religious beliefs themselves were behind the outbreaks in Brooklyn and North Carolina; it may have been due to widespread secular anti-vax beliefs in those tight-knit groups. But either way, a large proportion of the people in those areas were unvaccinated.
By the numbers, those outbreaks alone are responsible for the huge increase in measles cases in the U.S. this past year. And they are all due to people not getting vaccinated.
Herd immunity is not something to fuck around with. Please make sure you have your vaccinations.
Andrew Wakefield is one of the more disgusting humans we have. His actions had lead to a lot of pain and suffering, including that for autistic people.
"measles give kids autism!"
"this goes against our religion!"
It's a shame children have to suffer and die due to stupidity.
People preaching anti-vaccination are some of the worst scum on the planet, they put children in danger and even cause their deaths.
Come to think of it, I definitely need some immunization booster shots. I don't think I've had a Hep B booster since the immunization program in elementary, and I'm almost certainly overdue for some other adult boosters. That goes on my to-do list for this week.
Anyone else in the same boat as me? Find out how your doc/local health authority handles things and get in there. [IMG]http://www.facepunch.com/fp/ratings/heart.png[/IMG]
i haven't had shots since 2009 if that.
Wait so this Andrew guy was the person who basically started the myth that vaccines can give your children (or anyone of any age) autism?

This sketch is the reason I began to watch Penn and Teller. People that oppose vaccinations disgust me.
Didn't get my yearly flu shot this year and here I am at home with the flu.
When I was getting vaccinated for my trip to Indonesia my parents didn't think I'd need the typhoid vaccine
I got typhoid halfway through the trip
Don't get flu shots, but anyone who puts themselves out there and at risk for stuff like polio on purpose need to desperately reevaluate their knowledge on medicine and stop scaring others with pseudo-science
I vaccinate for all the major ones like the Measles or Tetanus but almost never for the common cold because odds are you're going to get it anyways.
I'm vaccinated for everything, it cost me like $800 because all local doctors here charge for vaccinations. Nearly a grand well spent I'd say.
My last vaccination was the second dose of Tetanus last year. It's a dose every 10 years.
Now I happily scrape myself on rusty metals free of worries.
Autism or death? Your choice you anti-vaccine morons. People born in the 90s who got the vaccinations were protected against dieseases like polio and measles. If an epidemic of measles were to happened today, those who are not vaccinated will die or get permanant scars
I vaccinate for all the major ones like the Measles or Tetanus but almost never for the common cold because odds are you're going to get it anyways.
technically speaking, the common cold is almost never the same virus so vaccines are rather pointless. it also is a symptom, usually of an allergic reaction, rather than a cause of disease.
Is it true that most of the people that preach anti-vaccination are actually vaccinated themselves, but refuse to vaccinate their children?
In my area (Silicon Valley in California), you cannot go to school if you don't get vaccines. I love this place.
Wakefield should die in fire.
I used to get vaccines like crazy, never got sick. First year I haven't, and I got the worst flu possible. Couldn't even stay awake, let alone walk. People who treat vaccines like the plague need to understand that for some people, it does help them, it prevents them from getting sick with what a human shouldn't suffer. Nowadays, the flu is worse than torture, I can say.
I've never been vaccinated, but I've only had the flu...twice?
I've never been vaccinated, but I've only had the flu...twice?
You have been lucky enough to have not yet been exposed to the diseases that you could otherwise be immune to. If you get them, they could vastly and negatively affect your life and the lives of others you spread it to.
Be responsible, get vaccinated. Your luck in the past does not indicate your luck in the future.
I'm just going to say, in fairness, Andrew Wakefield isn't to blame that much for this. He posted a scientific journal posing questions, like any scientist does and should do. The British press in particular went full retard and then proceeded with a hatchet job on Wakefield so they didn't look stupid.
The parents that didn't vaccinate are pretty stupid too.
On an average day, 430 children – 18 every hour – die of measles worldwide.
This is the saddest thing I've seen all month. Especially in light of an effective vaccination which is half a century old.
Ya I was having this conversation with my grandma the other day, she grew up in the days before the vaccines so it was a no brained for her, she had seen children die from these things, growing up in the depression era rural Pennsylvania, she didn't argue about vaccinating her children, parents today are more educated than ever before but somehow are even more ignorant than ever before
They don't even use the god damned .00001% mercury solution anymore, yet people still say "omg vaccines have mercury in dem!!!!!"
You get more mercury eating fucking tuna dumbasses.

Fuck that tetanus shot
whole day your arm feels like garbage

Uh
Okay, so he posted a journal asking questions, like any scientist would and should do. But then when his findings could not be replicated and his shit was shown to have been horribly tampered with, everyone but him renounced his findings. Attempts to replicate his findings have consistently failed. Andrew Wakefield has not gone to any great length to renounce and apologize for his flawed theory, as a scientist would and should.

Also, for those of you not getting the flu vaccine because you're going to get sick anyways, chances are you didn't get the flu.
Because if you get the flu, you will know. And you will feel like shit for a week. Its the worst parts of every other virus that causes cold and flu-like symptoms rolled into one long-lasting package.
It only takes once for you to decide that the flu vaccine is worth it, trust me :v:

I think he's tied with Thomas Midgley, the guy who came up with both leaded gasoline and freon

He had the decency to have one of his own ~bright ideas~ kill him. He was crippled with polio at age 51 and invented an elaborate system of pulleys and levers to help him get out of bed. It malfunctioned one day when he was 55, tangling him up and strangling him.
