• Popularity of Lib Dems becomes apparent in Barnsley by-election

The Liberal Democrats saw an embarrasing result as they came 6th in Barnsley's by-election - receiving less votes than the BNP. Barnsley is a working class northern town which has held Labour since 1935, but the Liberal Democrats said they would change this, "we want towns in the north like Barnsley in particular to know that we haven't forgot them, and that we are trying hard to remove the so called 'north south divide'" The election was being held after the previous Labour candidate was arrested under the expenses scadal, but that didn't stop Labour receiving a massive 60.8% of the votes. These were the results:

Dan Jarvis (Lab) 14,724
Jane Collins (UKIP) 2,953
James Hockney (C) 1,999
Enis Dalton (BNP) 1,463
Tony Devoy (Ind) 1,266
Dominic Carman (LD) 1,012
Kevin Riddiough (Eng Dem) 544
Howling Laud Hope (Loony) 198
Michael Val Davies (Ind) 60
I'm not far from Barnsley, but I predicted these would be the results: 1. Labour 2. Lib Dems 3. Conservatives 4. UKIP 5. English Democrats 6. BNP Guess I was quite a bit wrong http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-12643639
Oh god, less than the BNP *and* an independent as well
I think it's funnier that the Official Monster Raving Loony Party got nearly 200 votes :v:
If Labour lose the next election they'll need to think pretty hard about where they're fucking up because they should be able to guarantee a win simply by saying "lol we're not the coalition government." Then we can go back to having a bloated public sector and I don't need to worry about being employed for the following 4 years. That's if the tories haven't completely eviscerated the NHS by then.

*wipes sweat from brow* PHEW thanks dave
the whole thing is a load of wank if you ask me makes me wonder why people bother continuing at all, though looking at voter outcomes, that's not too far from the truth
lib dems and conservatives destroyin the country lets all leave also i like how the lib dems are now worse off than they were 10 years ago, despite being 'in power.' lmao gj nick clegg
Remember when we thought Clegg was going to be totally awesome? I feel sick when I look back on those threads.
I like how he basically punk'd the entire student population of England, convincing us that he'd be different, a breath of fresh air in British politics after the same old two horse race that we've seen for the 60 years. lol nope.
As if Labour were ever going to lose Barnsley though.
i told everyone they were being ridiculous when they touted clegg as being some kind of jesus baby who will shit all over the tories and labour well so far all they've done is just pissed off a load of people so thanks a lot i think i actually have more faith in the american system than the british system, and i am a fucking brit
Remember when we thought Clegg was going to be totally awesome? I feel sick when I look back on those threads.
I need to find that picture where he's surrounded by teenagers holding a sign that says "I will never vote to raise the cost of university".
As if Labour were ever going to lose Barnsley though.
You're right, it's wrong to think that this is necessarily indicative of the entire country, but based on previous results there's growing evidence that the Lib Dems have lost the majority of their voting base.

Labour has ruined this country with 13 years of splurging.
[img_thumb]http://i55.tinypic.com/2vt1t92.jpg[/img_thumb]
Yessssssssssssss. Thanks, dude! I appreciate it. :3:
Has anyone seen PMQs? All they do is go, "It was all Labour's fault, we're working on it, next question!"
Nick Clegg has commented and said, "It was obviously a bad result, but in truth the election was no contest for any non-Labour candidate ... I have no doubt people will try to use this single result to write off the Liberal Democrats. They have done it in the past and we have proved them wrong and we will prove them wrong again.
Has anyone seen PMQs? All they do is go, "It was all Labour's fault, we're working on it, next question!"
Because for the most part that's true.
they won't because david cameron said so [img_thumb]http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/01/05/article-0-07C15DA7000005DC-390_964x481.jpg[/img_thumb]
So true.
[img_thumb]http://i55.tinypic.com/2vt1t92.jpg[/img_thumb]
So it isn't his fault my school can't pay for the classes I need? Gosh I guess the money simply vanished into thin air am I right? What I also find interesting is that the popularity of the BNP is rising.
What I also find interesting is that the popularity of the BNP is rising.
They usually get a lot of votes from Barnsley, they came 4th with 8.9% in the 2010 so I wouldn't say it has risen much. UKIP has rocketed though, they only got 4.7% in 2010
It's a shame the Libdems sort of sold themselves out. But I guess better have Labour than Tories. I'd just like to know what exactly would a Loony party member in power do? Here's a related and hilarious video:
Because for the most part that's true.
'Cept as the shadow government, they had access to all the documents, fact and figures the current government does. The whole 'OH WE DIDN'T KNOW HAD BAD IT WAS' is an act, presumably because the co-alliation government didn't really have any firm plans for the budget. Then you add in the fact that they are fighting unemployment by, uh, forcing job cuts in the public sector and making it harder for young people to get degrees. Or keep making u-turns on various issues, which seem to caused by lack of communication. This government is shaping up to be a huge disaster, far worse than the last one.
You're right, it's wrong to think that this is necessarily indicative of the entire country, but based on previous results there's growing evidence that the Lib Dems have lost the majority of their voting base.
and the reason for that being they're leader sucks Camerons dirty cock pretty much. the Lib Dems have lost most of they're credibility by giving up they're ideals and plans they had for helping the country and just giving into the conservatives for the sake of a bit of power, most of the people who voted for Lib Dems in the first place ( me ) wanted the Lib Dems in power not the coalition bullshit hence why they lost support, i feel it would have been a better Goverment if Clegg had taken Browns offer of joining with Labour.
they won't because david cameron said so [img_thumb]http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/01/05/article-0-07C15DA7000005DC-390_964x481.jpg[/img_thumb]
Didn't he also say tuition fee's won't be going up?

Also not everyone has the divine right to go to university, you have to make a tough choice to go to university and the increase may stop people going just to have a laugh for 3 years.

The increases in uni fees will hit poorer students the hardest, and last week it was revealed private universities would still get government funding. It got laughable when David Willets claimed they were expecting universities not to charge the max rate, when just about everyone else was.
