(I'll be putting an 8600gts in it for now =()
Gpu?
Where's the GPU?
Sorry, added to OP that I'll be putting an 8600GTS in it for now. Forgot to mention that! I would feel sad if I had forgotten something like that haha.
Okay, well it seems like a nice base build. Pretty damn good for $400. Save up and throw a GTX 460 or something in there and you'll have a beast of a budget gaming rig.

[editline]31st December 2010[/editline] (This one http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1043233-400-AMD-AM3-build-(no-OS) )
I changed almost every component from my previous thread, and really wanted to just update that thread but I started that thread on an alt, and I'm too lazy to log out and back into my alt, then back to this one. [editline]1st January 2011[/editline] So sorry about the double thread, but thanks for the comments. [editline]1st January 2011[/editline] Also yeah, saving for a 460.
I'd have gone with a different PSU, that's OEMed by HEC and isn't that good http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story5&reid=158 don't quite understand why you're asking us about the build after it's too late
I started making the thread to ask before I bought...but I got impatient :(. I felt confident enough in what I was buying though, so I was just like fuck it this is about as good as I can get it. But I had 90% of the OP done before I purchased it, after I purchased it I was like well fuck I already made a thread pretty much. Thought it'd be good to provide a template for anyone else shopping in the lower-mid range too.
PSU is horrible.
I managed to make a AMD phenom II x4 955 build for 500$, with a GTX 460, so I suppose you could have gotten better, but it seems fine, excluding the PSU.
Also the motherboard is a bit of a waste, for $80 you could get an SLi/Crossfire capable one. Or just saved yourself $30
PSU is horrible.
Psh, I'm okay with it. It's not horrible, but it's nothing spectacular. [editline]1st January 2011[/editline]
Also the motherboard is a bit of a waste, for $80 you could get an SLi/Crossfire capable one. Or just saved yourself $30
I don't intend to SLI or Crossfire for probably years. I may consider it when I get a new PC in 2-4 years, but it's not at all a necessity.
The PSU can't be all that bad if the manufacturer is prepared to put a 7 year warranty on it [editline]1st January 2011[/editline] Or they are just stupid
well apparently they changed from a better design to one that's worse but looks better in marketing so I wouldn't call them smart [editline]1st January 2011[/editline] and no the PSU is HEC so it's pretty bad
I had the same build for the same price not so long ago, but with a 9800gt and a bigger ASUS mobo plus a corsair 500w :buddy: Now i hve a phenom II x4
I had the same build for the same price not so long ago, but with a 9800gt and a bigger ASUS mobo plus a corsair 500w :buddy: Now i hve a phenom II x4
How's the Phenom?
Psh, I'm okay with it. It's not horrible, but it's nothing spectacular.
So you're ok with frying all your parts when it malfunctions?
That PSU should be fine... We're using one in a couple computers of this spec at work.. Been holding fine for a while.
The PSU is fine if you're on a budget. How is it that prebuilts with shittier PSUs than his survive absolutely fine?
So you're ok with frying all your parts when it malfunctions?
I love how everyone is like 'That PSU isn't a high-end Antec: IT'S GOING TO EXPLODE.' I've never used a high end PSU, and have never had any problems in my many thousands of hours of using 5+ personal PCs. It's definitely not the cheapest PSU, and if it does happen to not work then too bad. Shit happens. Even a $600 PSU could be a DOA, or die in 2 minutes, or 2 months. I'm not at all worried about it.
Even a $600 PSU could be a DOA, or die in 2 minutes, or 2 months.
Except it has a significantly lower chance of damaging other components if it did fail, and a significantly lower chance of failing in the first place. You get what you pay for. DOA fair enough, plenty of high end PSUs are. Not that it really matters.
I've had two desktops over the past 11-12 years, both with generic no-brand PSUs. Neither have died. Still using one 5-6 year old PC with a generic PSU. Maybe I've been lucky :v:
'That PSU isn't a high-end Antec: IT'S GOING TO EXPLODE.'
Antec isn't a high-end PSU maker silly it's decent, but if you want high-end, then there are far better choices
Well yeah. I chose poor wording. I didn't mean high-end as 1500+ watts, but more of high-end as high efficiency, "kings" of wattage range.
Antec isn't a high-end PSU maker silly it's decent, but if you want high-end, then there are far better choices
uh not really [editline]4th January 2011[/editline] depends on what line but antec does have some of the best high-end psus on the market
Nice, when you get the money together for a GPU get a GTX 560 or a HD 6950, ought to be enough for pretty much any game. The Athlon II X4 lack L3 cache and that might actually prove to lower gaming performance when compared to Core 2 Quads, Phenom II, i5 and i7. Luckily your motherboard is AM3 and you can later upgrade to one of the Phenom II X4 or (at that point potentially more sensible) X6s, so yes you're covered for a good while with this set-up if all goes well.
