• Good art software for a beginner

Hey good people of Creationism Corner. Before you probably shout at me saying 'wrong forum!' I checked the hardware and software section but there actually isn't a sub-section for software specifically (unless I'm blind) So basically I'm getting my new PC in a few days time and I've been really impressed with some of the work you guys do using tablet PC's and software programme art. As an old school pen and paper artist I wanted to have a pop at it. My friend gave me a Trust-Slimline Design Tablet TB-5300 to use for a while which at the moment it looks pretty good and reacts quite well. If you want to suggest a reasonably priced tablet PC please do! So as a beginner I was wondering what software drawing programmes would be good for a beginner and perhaps when I feel more comfortable, maybe progress onto advanced programmes. Just to let you know, as a student, I have access to download AutoDesk products for free, thus meaning I can get SketchbookPro. (If you think that programme is any good) Many thanks!
I don't have a tablet or any drawing programs, but the Wacom Bamboo tablet always seems to crop up in these threads. This is probably a better place to ask: http://www.facepunch.com/threads/848706-The-quot-Which-tablet-is-right-for-me-quot-Megathread!?p=18634917
Photoshop. It's recommended to start with software you will stick to. Switching can sometimes be painful. As for a tablet, wacom is best. Either bamboo or an intuos if you can afford.
Only ever used photoshop a few times and got mad at it. Thanks for the tablet PC info, I'll probably look into buying one if I quite like using it compared to pen and paper. But for now the Trust tablet seems to be doing the job.
Gimp! is free, however do your research because it's not compatible with all Wacom tablets, especially not the older (cheaper) models. Corel Painter seems alright, but the only support it offers on tablet problems is for Mac users which I was kind of frustrated at. I've only had problems with Photoshop when it has randomly refused to change pressure sensitivity settings which means I've had to change these settings with the software driver and not Photoshop.
so gimp is the way to go for beginners? What about SketchbookPro or Paint tool SAI? etc. Well as I said in my previous post, I'll stick with my current tablet for now and adjust accordingly. And yeah, I'll definitely stay away from Photoshop, my brain refuses to work when I used it. Many thanks :)
Open canvas is good for begineers as its cheap (older versions are free but buggy) http://opencanvas.en.softonic.com/ old version http://wistinga.online.fr/opencanvas/ Oc has a nice natural feel to it
I love my Gimp.
