• Windows being windows. Error 997, Overlapped I/O operation is in progress.

So I've just done a clean install of windows, because I managed to fuck my earlier windows somehow, so now I'm reinstalling a bunch of stuff and I'm hitting this problem; "Error 997. Overlapped I/O operation is in progress" on a few installers, like some Intel Rapid Storage drivers, or Microsoft Visual C 2008 Redist. Packages, which then stop me from installing these. (Note: newer and older than 2008 work fine) It isn't a serious issue, but it is stopping me from using some software, like installing photoshop and things. After a little bit of googling, the culprit was apparently a specific Windows Update (KB2918614), which did something to the Windows Install Service or something, but it says it only does it to .MSI file installers. I then proceeded to uninstall this update. No dice, still happens. Saw something about fiddling your registry, "Whitelisting" the installation software by using the product code of the installation file, but couldn't find any of that for .exe files. I then found something about a hotfix (reinstalled the 'faulty' update at this point), and proceeded to get that. Still no dice. I'm losing most of my hope here, since I haven't found a solution in 2 days and my previous windows did not have this problem before it blew up. I also tried all the other things from the book, i.e. disabling antivirus, and stuff. Any help would be appreciated, since I'm all out of options. Apparently it's caused by a bad update from WU. Try uninstalling this update in the programs and features control panel: Microsoft security update (KB2918614)

When you reinstalled Windows, did you try to install the stuff you wanted before running WU and installing updates?
When you reinstalled Windows, did you try to install the stuff you wanted before running WU and installing updates?
I did both of them at the same time, since I had to restart multiple times, so I installed the most important drivers(graphics drivers, wifi drivers and stuff), and the first batch of windows updates. Then some other stuff and another batch of windows updates and so on.
Well, I "fixed" it by uninstalling the service pack update, and some others, so I guess it was some other "faulty" update. So I guess this thread is solved.
