I've been playing Shogun 2 and it's gotten me into the whole sengoku period stuff. Apparently there are a lot of good movies on the subject but i'm finding it hard to locate them.
Anyone know of some sweet Samurai movies based around the Sengoku period? Large battles and shit would be cool. I'm looking into Ran right now.
any samurai movie by Akira Kurosawa

Was just about to suggest this
Not really a movie but if you have a lot of time on your hands I recommend a 1980 miniseries called Shogun. Its only 5 episodes but its more than 9 hours long. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sh%C5%8Dgun_%28TV_miniseries%29

I'll check it out, thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll probably check out most of Akira's stuff, watching Ran now.

His non-samurai movies are really good, too. Check out High and Low and Ikiru.
Only samurai movie I can think of right now is The Last Samurai.
The Last Samurai huehuehuehuehuehue
Yeah I saw it, pretty good. Mostly because of the production quality. Ran was pretty rad and now i'm watching Shogun which is neato so far.
Apparently 13 Assassins is a great film, I haven't seen it yet but I'm about to watch it when I get home from school.

Just a FYI, there's like 30 of these films.
I watched 'Throne of Blood' last week. Its a Kurosawa flick and its starring Mifune of course. Its Shakespeare's Macbeth set in medieval Japan. A bit boring but the finale is fantastic.

That's one of the many things I love about Kurosawa. His plots are full of Shakespearian elements. One of my favorites is the The Bad Sleep Well, which is of course, derived from Hamlet.
