My friend wants to buy a new PC, but I suggest upgrading.

So there are his current Specs. He plans on buying a new PC towards the 1k range, while I suggested that upgrading would be a cheaper route, with the same results. Could someone suggest some new parts for it?
I mean, the motherboard is an obvious choice to fix, it doesn't support DDR3. So try to find things that would work with a newer MB as well.

Might as well buy a new PC, motherboard, RAM, CPU, GPU, HDD and likely the PSU are all far worse than $1000 can do, the case and DVD drive can be reused (I'd still get a new one if it's not SATA) (and the HDD, for extra storage, but I suggest getting a Spinpoint F3, plus maybe even an SSD at that price). Find out what PSU he has.

I wouldn't bother reusing anything from that PC - he may as well keep it as an extra or a media centre or whatever he wants. Who uses a CD drive today anyway, and for $1000 you can get almost whatever you want.
Ha, I remember when the Q6600 was the shit. I think if he were strapped for cash he could probably just beef up the video card if he wanted more performance during gaming. But it sounds to me like he has some money, and he can get a pretty nice setup with $1000.

yes, really if he didn't want to spend the $1000, as said, he wouldn't have to. Get a 6950/70, or a 560 TI / 570 and a new PSU, maybe a bit better HDD, and I'm betting he'd run everything fine. But at that point, might as well spend the extra $400-500 for a new motherboard, RAM, and CPU I suppose.

Why does everybody recommend the Spinpoint F3? I saw it in several other threads.

To put it simply: it's one of the cheapest drives you can buy (especially per GB), it's the fastest consumer 7200rpm drive you can buy, and it's reliable as fuck. It's a win-win-win situation.

People use a cd drive to install the OS and drivers for hardware that's not available on the internet.

You dont need a CD drive to do that.
You can do it all from a USB drive
You SHOULD not use the drivers from your CD anyway.
I recommend downloading the newest drivers, from their website

exactly
I don't want to install a CD drive which I might use once for the OS

If you read my post I said for drivers that are not available on the internet. For example an old netgear setup software.

The VelociRaptor is a 10,000 RPM hard drive, but the F3 still beats it out for boot time? Fuck. There goes my smile.
I'm getting the feeling that because the F3 is always the go-to drive on FP, the F4 sucks.
The F4 doesn't really suck, it's just a 5400 RPM drive not really meant for performance, more for storage, power saving, and quietness.

However, when I decided to grab a 570, I created a big bottleneck. So, it's now showing is age and I'm hoping to replace it next month.
I don't have a CD drive any more and I hardly miss it. When I do need one on VERY rare occasions, I have a USB CD Drive enclosure which I use for multiple PC's.
