Suspect on loose as police investigate preparations for bombing
Part of a German city is on lockdown during a police operation to stop a suspected terror plot.
Police said they blew open a door as searches continued in Chemnitz but the suspect behind the threat has not been found.
Scores of armed officers evacuated residents and cordoned off large areas of the Fritz Heckert district on Saturday morning.
A spokesperson for Saxony Police said: "We are carrying out a large operation in Chemnitz following suspicion of a planned bomb attack...a person of interest could not be found."
German sources include more information, since Daily Mail offers the best / only translations of it so far, I'll quote them:
The suspect has been named locally as Jabir A - a Syrian who was under surveillance by the Federal Office for Constitutional Protection in Cologne, say reports.
He is suspected of plotting a bomb attack on a German airport, according to Online Focus.
I'm happy the German police acted on the hints they got and prevented a potential terrorist attack.
Great!
It's far better to hear about police operations in response to terror threats than it is to hear about succesful bombings.

Definitely. The suspect is still on the loose though, so let's hope he doesn't hurt anyone while trying to not get caught.
Pretty surprised with how good our police and intelligence service seems to be, there've been many larger planned attacks that were prevented in the last few years.

We even intercepted a shitload of firearms smugglers.

Well frankly- While i dont think you should underestimate the terrorists, and the whole islamic cock-insecurity syndrome.
I dont think the people we're up against are particularly competent, i mean fuck, these are the people who burn/bomb schools. They have no intellectual infrastructure, and no culture of innovation/invention (not anymore anyway). When you stack the numbers up, we in the west with our long and prestigious history of performing every kind of warfare to others and each other- Should expect to outperform loosely organized middle eastern islamists.
The biggest threat currently as far as i see it are the lone wolf assholes, because it's pretty much impossible to prevent them without being a fascist state.
You know what the bombers are going to do now? reschedule.
Fighting terrorism is along arduous task that cannot be solved by throwing piles of guns or ammo at it in an attempt to make go away. Unfortunately no-one wants to step up to the batting plate and commit to that task.

how would you approach the problem?
how would you approach the problem?
Nothing.
No one commits an atrocity thinking they're a terrible person, rather they think that they would become a hero, or a martyr for their cause. So I will give the people who commit to these bombings absolutely nothing, no media attention, no acknowledgment, nothing other than a first aid response team to clean up after their mess.
Terrorism is a real threat of course but the damage is not so much physical, but rather psychological. Removing any amount of attention a bomber might get discourages their actions that much more seeing as no act of violence they can portray will effect the politics of the nation.
sehr gut
They caught him in Leipzig earlier this night.
Great job!

Apparently a fellow Syrian countryman gave hints to his whereabouts.
Jaber Albakr asked him if he could stay at his place and he agreed but secretly called the police, when police stormed the apartment he was already bound.

OK, I must be reading this wrong, are you really saying the police should just leave people to die?

I'm pretty certain he's just criticizing the mass media attention on any bombing or terrorist attack.
Its all an attention grab to justify said terrorist actions and further encourage the martyr mentality.
Of course let the police do their job in preventive actions like this, and let police/EMTs onto the site of bombings. Just keep the reporting comparatively on the down-low.

no, he very clearly said he would only give a "first aid response team to clean up after their mess" unless I'm reading him wrong too, either way a very silly opinion to hold.
