Too many running processes... makes my laptop slow.

My laptop usually has over 100-106 running processes at any given time. I can probably prune it down to 90 or 95 on a good day.
Even then it is still annoying to see that many running tasks. It is killing my performance of an otherwise good laptop. The thing is I don't know what other processes to kill. I uninstalled all the shitty bloatware that came with my new (HP) laptop when I first got it and it was fast then, but the average running processes for it was around 70+ and after my firewall and antivirus it jumped to around 80.
I have a few other programs that run full-time such as Steam, Utorrent and Dropbox. It is now shitty, slow, and lags a lot. I scanned for viruses, spyware, etc with the MS securty suite and also with Nod32 and didn't find anything. I ran registry cleaners, cleaned my cache, defragged, and have done other basic computer maintenance procedures and it is still not the speed when I first got it. I even got Soluto and started killing useless bootup apps that eat at my performance. At least boot-to-browse time is now about 3 and a half minutes.
It is really pissing me off because it causes my computer's resume from hibernate time to take forever. My desktop on the other hand has usually around 80 or less running process, and what I can see from now about 10 of those are different instances of svchost.exe.
Any suggestions to what I can do to help prune down my Laptop's tasklist and speed it up again?
No formatting because I don't have an easy way of backing my shit up (no money for external drive) plus it would be a bitch to have to download all the drivers from the HP site and load them up after a new install, so fuck that.
No switching to Linux because a lot of software I use won't work on Linux, and I will never switch to Mac... which needs no explanation.
Look at the task manager, look for some suspicious crap, look it up, and see if you can/should remove it somehow.
Also, just what are you downloading from uTorrent. :geno:
Post a screenshot of the startup tab in msconfig.

There are three more cut off that weren't worth capping:
DMXLauncher, Sprint SmartView, Java(TM) Platform SE Auto Updater 2 0
Well shit.
Uncheck everything except ESET, Comodo, things by Microsoft, and whatever else you specifically set to startup automatically yourself/things you know you need. (You can reenable stuff later if you have problems)
Maybe leave the RAID Event Monitor as well, I'm not sure.
For reference, mine looks like this:

reinstall windows - old stuff should be saved in windows.old
Don't install any unnecessary shit
also I did a windows vista reinstall on this computer only a while ago
20 processes running - 7 chrome.exes = 13 processes on the desktop
Compared to the 40 or so I had before.
Google Chrome is a godsend.
ONLY USE ONE ANTIVIRUS
Antivirus programs are some of the biggest slowdown factors on your computer, having multiple will make it run slow as fuck
I recommend MSE
Keep windows up to date, install updates when they're available.
Some other huge programs that will cause slowdown
Internet Explorer
Firefox
Steam (I still use it though)
iTunes+Quicktime
Certain Drivers (printers are notorious for bulky drivers and forced crapware)
Skype
Some replacement programs
Gyazo for Jing
Sharepod for iTunes
I run 80 processes. Is that actually many on Windows 7?

That's what i thought because i had like 65 when i installed it.
80 is a lot. I have 54 at the moment and that's with Steam, Firefox, Spotify and my Logitech keyboard processes running.
I could have sworn that I heard somewhere before Win7 was released that a feature it was going to have was merging similar processes into one... like instead of 10 versions of svchost, you would only have one, and whatever needs it just calls upon it.

Yeah, you should try cleaning up your pc, disabling startup programs, uninstalling some and cleaning up registry with CCleaner.

Go from helping OP to posting how many processes we have.
I have 35 on win7, btw.
Reformat, install only the essentials.
we're talking about w7, not XP
server 2k3 nice try
my 7 VM runs about 35 processes.
People, we are not interested of how many processes you are running.
Any luck yet OP?

I've never found cleaning the registry to be necessary or helpful
