Well, my computer very recently (today) started quitting explorer.exe, I don't know why, I haven't any visited suspicious sites, haven't downloaded anything (actually, I've been in fallout for the last three days) and then randomly, while browsing FP, explorer quits. I have no clue why this could be happening. The Windows Update icon goes away along with explorer, too.
Specs:

RAM: 3 GB DDR2
Mobo: BIOSTAR TA790GXE Micro

Try running a virusscan.
scan with avast or AVG
Explorer.exe crashes for me sometimes too. I just live with it.

This. It normally crashes for me on startup, but it comes back up within a couple of minutes. Just need to be patient with Vista.
