President Barack Obama’s approval rating has declined to an all-time low as public frustration with Washington and pessimism about the nation’s direction continue to grow, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
Just 42 percent approve of the president’s job performance, which is down five points from earlier this month. By comparison, 51 percent disapprove of his job in office -- tied for his all-time high.
The NBC/WSJ pollsters argue that no single reason explains Obama’s lower poll standing. Rather, they attribute it to the accumulation of setbacks since the summer -- allegations of spying by the National Security Agency, the debate over Syria’s chemical weapons, the government shutdown and now intense scrutiny over the problems associated with the health care law’s federal website and its overall implementation.
But that two-thumbs-down assessment also applies to almost every other politician measured in the poll. Consider:
-The public’s view of the Republican Party has reached another all-time low in the survey, with 22 percent seeing the GOP in a positive light and 53 percent viewing it negatively

Higher than expected honestly.
Honestly, I was expecting to hit even lower.
Everyone in politics sucks right now IMO

The people who have no chance of winning have been looking appealing for a while.
Wow the GOP is gonna have to do some major damage control next year if they want to have a chance at maintaining control of the house
I'll bet all the swing states are going to vote red next election.

But their popularity is plummeting because of the debt crisis. I don't think people will forget about that so easily.

Yeah but they will remember this 'Obama-care crisis' even though it's a good thing, rates are rising and the website is fucked. That alone is enough to make uneducated voters think twice before voting democrat.

You over estimate the attention span of America when it comes to politics

I dont think so. I think that we're really underestimating how much people have been following this fuck up of a congress
One second everyone hates Republicans because the government shut down for two weeks
Now everyone is turning against Obama because Obamacare is going badly
I have a feeling nothing in politics is permanent.

The good ol days will always be perfect.
I would expect a Republican president next term. Honestly as long as he is not as much of a moron as Romney, I'll vote for him.
The whole NSA thing did kind of demolish him.
approval ratings don't mean jack shit to me anymore. every president's approval rating ever since polling groups started to try to gather approval ratings over time has declined at the end of their presidency in comparison to the time of their inauguration. the only real exception was clinton
I would expect a Republican president next term. Honestly as long as he is not as much of a moron as Romney, I'll vote for him.
I won't. I'm not going to start favoring them just because Obama isn't perfect. They're far worse across the board.

Yeah but it's not like a Republican would have done anything different.
Obama is a bad president. He's done unrepairable damage to this country, and yet he still keeps going! I hope we get a better president soon.
To be honest, at some point the real story will be known to all.
Policy wise, Obama was pushed into a corner when his own party could not unite to pass a public healthcare bill. The public option was dropped because two "democrats" in the Senate sided with filibustering Republicans.
Because of this quasi betrayal to the party, the Democrats were compelled to re-use Romneycare, which itself came from a 1994 bill made by Newt Grinfrich's Republicans (meaning insurance company lobbyists) to combat Clintoncare (which did not pass). With this version of the bill, without coverage for Abortion, the remaining Democrats passed the bill.
The Republican Bill was forced to pass as Obamacare because of Obama's campaign promised healthcare reform. What else could the President do but sign it? Simply give up on Healthcare Reform? Imagine how terrible that would have looked for him.
This, with the terrible Government contract system that gave the website to a massive incompetent bureaucracy, turned Obama's aspirations for comprehensive healthcare for everyone in the country into a disaster that Republicans will use against Democrats for years to come.
Imagine every time a Democrat wants to improve the lives of Americans! The Republicans will just say that it will turn out like Obamacare, and say a bunch of things about bureaucracy and nanny states.
It's kind of a lose lose situation for Obama.
so... 42% approval of his performance (which is indirectly rating a lot of contributors' ability to help him do the job), but his overall approval in the office is 51% disapproval, only a 2% difference from his high of 51% positive??
That doesn't sound like much of a change at all, was expecting a stock exchange crash-and-burn chart looking thing coming in here. Sounds more like the swing voters have swung opinions
I gotta wonder why I never even hear of these polls til they're on the news. Where are they happening? I want to be statistical

I still really don't mind Obama and I still think he'd do a better job than Romney.

Gallup has called my house a few times and asked me questions. They always end with the question 'to know we chose a random person, how many people live in your house' so that they can't be accused of some kind of polling gerrymandering where they sway results by know a bunch one person households that lean towards a certain political party.

Lik if you agree
its sad, he doesnt seem like the worst president ever but hes made so many bad decisions over the years its not even funny
It's going to be hard to tell if this whole crisis sticks with him seeing as it took Iraq for people to remember Bush's presidency which is huge even compared to this, it's only getting to 2 years into Obama's term so it'll be interesting to see what he might do to get popular again and not be remembered as the president that was in when the shutdown happened.

The US has over 300 million people, so saying a country has 300,000,000 for example, 1 percent is 3 million people.
The scale of US politics is fucking huge compared to the rest of the world.

so basically you want a popular, votable Republican candidate who is also competent, likeable, and smarter than Romney, and McCain isn't running for president anymore.
alright, once i get back from flying my pig to work you can tell me all about it

By 2016 McCain will look like a socialist to Republican voters so he wouldn't even be a contender.

at least the vicious cycle of hardline Republican candidates = bad approval ratings = less moderate candidates might centrifuge the smarter voters and politicians out of the Republican party
