The US National Security Agency (NSA) is collecting the telephone records of tens of millions of Americans, US officials have confirmed.
The practice, first reported by the Guardian newspaper, has been used to stop a "significant" terrorist attack on the US, a senior congressman said.
On Wednesday, the newspaper published the secret order directing the Verizon company to hand over telephone data.
Civil liberties groups said the details of the report were "stunning".
Senior US Senator Dianne Feinstein on Thursday confirmed the secret court order was a three-month renewal of an ongoing practice.
US House intelligence committee chairman Mike Rogers told reporters collecting Americans' phone records was legal, authorised by Congress and had not been abused by the Obama administration.
He said it had prevented a "significant" attack on the US "within the past few years" but declined to offer more information.
Later, White House spokesman Josh Earnest described the practice as a "critical tool" enabling US authorities to monitor suspected terrorists.
Wow okay
So it doesn't include what the callers actually said?
Because that would make this a million times worse than it already is.
Hey government, fuck off.

Did it really? Spill the beans then, Senior Congressman?
That's a lot of suspected terrorists.
Sometimes I wonder if anything I've said on the internet has gotten me labeled as a terrorist and I'm secretly being monitored by the government.

Say hi to the president for me.
Good luck analyzing it.

Whenever I'm about to post something about Israel, I imagine I'm in an interrogation room with a bunch of Mossad agents who show me a folder of everything I've said about Israel on the Internet.
:C

We have alot of reasons to trust Obama! Him and his administration have never ever ever lied to the American people.
Eeyup.
"George Orwell's dystopian classic "1984" was published 64 years ago today in 1949."
Haha! Good thing the government would never spy on..nevermind

Owning Payday makes you a terrorist.
Just pray you don't own one and two.

this reminds me of when the giant bomb guys were setting up their site they got investigated by the fbi for creating a video series called "how to make a bomb"
terrorism is the best excuse for anything in the 21st century

Dont forget piracy.
If they can find terrorists by looking at posts, internet history, and phone calls.
Then I'm the next Osama Bin Laden.

It pisses me off. It's just like in elementary school, when one kid would do something fucking stupid and a shitty rule that doesn't even make sense would be enforced on everybody.
terrorism is the best excuse for anything in the 21st century
Yep it's also a example of Post-9/11 environment/paranoia which the Government has gotten more paranoid lately which they taken desperate measures to prevent another 9/11 at least in their minds.
Example of Post-9/11 paranoia.
Which is why the terrorists won, yet so many people in America (namely the government) don't want to admit that this is the case.

Wait that hasn't already happened to you?
I think this is very damned if they do, damned if they don't type of situation. For all you know, they could have actually stopped terrorist attacks; you just wouldn't know about it. A thwarted terrorist attack doesn't make the same headlines as the Boston Bombing did.

I highly doubt Osama's master plan was to make the government collect phone records.
I think you people haven't realized that the post-9/11 environment pays parallels to McCarthyism in the 1950s so really if you really think about it, nothing has changed, this is a common practice for the U.S. Government to "Root out the Enemy from within" .

That's a lot of DickPics.
I highly doubt Osama's master plan was to make the government collect phone records.
No but it scared the hell out of the American people, and the government. That's what terrorists do, instill terror and fear into the general population.

It's in the name "Terror-ist". One who inspires terror. One who causes people to be afraid. And we've let them win.

It did scare the hell out of everyone, 12 years ago. Daily life for almost everyone now goes along without a hitch. The only time most people think about terrorism is when they see media about it.

How have they won? Because the government has enacted some mild intrusive programs?

No, terrorists use fear as a means to an end, you're thinking of Batman villains.
