http://www.destructoid.com/gog-admits-site-closure-was-a-hoax-and-f-ck-you-too--184626.phtml
Good Old Games has officially revealed that its site "closure" was just a big hoax to promote the launch of a new website. Having taken its site down since Sunday and blocking customers from accessing any games they might have just purchased, GOG has effectively said "f*ck you" to its users just for attention. For what it's worth, the new GOG will still feature DRM-free games and no download client. It had not been bought out, and seems to still be its own boss, so no actual structural changes have been had. More games and a better login process have all been promised. I'd just started using GOG, but now I believe I'll need to think long and hard about continuing to do so. Sorry, but that's NOT how you promote a site relaunch. Pretending you're going under, blocking off your customers, and basically giving your current users the finger isn't the way you generate excitement for your site. [Update: GOG has updated its site with an apology for the hoax and a countdown. In my easily manipulated heart, I have already forgiven them, but I am still going to be angry with them for a bit and send them to bed with no supper]
"long and hard" What a dick move.
Why were so many people upset? I was smart and had all my shit backed up. I even have most of my Steam games backed up so if Valve ever goes belly-up (and I don't like redownloading huge games on my crap connection).
I want to buy things from it because it made me realise how lacking other services are. :(
What's this Good Old Games? I've never heard of it.
What's this Good Old Games? I've never heard of it.
A digital distribution platform (kind of like Steam) that sells old games with no DRM. Seriously though, how could they think this was a good idea?

I got Postal 2, Robinson's Requiem, Stronghold Crusader, and Fallout 2 from this site. It is really good.
Do they have the old paradox games? Might pick up a few if so.
you still cant use the games you backed up if steam dies.
Actually, its been said before that Gabe stated there was a built in fail-safe in Steam where, if Valve ever went down, all games would be "unlocked" and would no longer need Steam to function.
Actually, its been said before that Gabe stated there was a built in fail-safe in Steam where, if Valve ever went down, all games would be "unlocked" and would no longer need Steam to function.
Plus I think Valve would be kind enough to update it one last time so the games could be played, even if the fail-safe didn't exist.
It wasn't really a hoax, then, they truly were rethinking how they were going to revamp the site.
I forgive you GOG.
you still cant use the games you backed up if steam dies.
Possibility of steamapi.dll crack if valve does go belly-up.
you still cant use the games you backed up if steam dies.
Really the primary reason was so if I wanted to reinstall them I wouldn't have to wait for them to download. But what Zeddy said about Valve releasing the unlock key is another reason.
I don't get why everyone is bitching over this. I don't see how it effects anyone in any way.
I don't get why everyone is bitching over this. I don't see how it effects anyone in any way.
Because they took away their games (although temporary), dumbass.
I don't get why everyone is bitching over this. I don't see how it effects anyone in any way.
they announced they were going to close they took away everyones ablility to buy/download and backup their games. then went "SIKE LOL"
this seems pretty cool... are their prices any good?
$5 or $6 and $10 (forgot which one 'twas, 5 or 6) [editline]10:11AM[/editline] The prices are only one of those two. At least were in the Beta. [editline]10:11AM[/editline] Excluding promotions
Because they took away their games (although temporary), dumbass.
They said that they would have let you redownload them, dumbass. Oh it's you, no wonder you are saying dumbass for no reason.
Actually, its been said before that Gabe stated there was a built in fail-safe in Steam where, if Valve ever went down, all games would be "unlocked" and would no longer need Steam to function.
Down with steam, now!
What's this Good Old Games? I've never heard of it.
Digital distributor whose shtick is selling old, classic games for dirt cheap, updated to work on Windows XP/Vista/7 and with absolutely no DRM. It's awesome. I've bought quite a few titles from there, including the original Fallout games.
They said that they would have let you redownload them, dumbass. Oh it's you, no wonder you are saying dumbass for no reason.
butthurt detected
They said that they would have let you redownload them, dumbass. Oh it's you, no wonder you are saying dumbass for no reason.
This. And they probably have an EULA that allows them to do whatever the fuck they want to with user accounts. If you agree to it, it's your problem. Besides, they didn't even literally say they're closing the site down forever, they just said something along the lines "We can't go on like this, we need change". Everyone just jumped to conclusions without giving it a second thought. Mad props to them for pulling the stunt off, it worked brilliantly.
They got balls. I like GoG even more.
butthurt detected
Me butthurt? Nah, you're the one who started it so it seems more like you are. If I were butthurt I wouldn't be speaking in a friendly manner, instead I would be talking in an angry manner.
if this site would get the original Roller Coaster Tycoon and 2 on it I would love this site forever.
if this site would get the original Roller Coaster Tycoon and 2 on it I would love this site forever.
I want Shadow Warrior to be on there :(
