Computer Perfomrance choppy - Hardware & Software

When i bought my laptop it was performing well and and i used to run video games very smoothly, but all of a sudden performance became choppy, even the startup is slower than usual, the first time this happened were a few days after i installed minecraft which i happened to be playing when this slowdown occurred, i also happened to install lots of programs. So could this be simply because i installed too many programs, or is minecraft known to slow down system performance after a while, no viruses are causing this though because i used spybot and avira to scan and they only found cookies, but avira did detect worms that could be associated with java. I have windows 7 64 bit, 4GB RAM, Nividia GeForce GTS 360M card, also an intel core i7 (7 CPUs)

Could be throttling due to heat. Make sure all your fans are spinning, etc.

I have fans at the back, but they tend to be silent at times, could they be damaged? Because i dropped it once and heard a loud thud and it slipped a few times.

reinstall/update your drivers uninstall any bulkware you don't need

One of my friends was under the impression his i7-920 had 8 cores back when he overhauled his machine. He was slightly disappointed when I explained to him that it was a quad core with HT.

I don't want to derail this topic further. But - back to my other post, my friend was under the impression his processor had 8 cores because he saw 8 graphs on the task manager performance tab. I explained to him that he had a quad core, but each core supported 2 hardware threads.
