For about 4-5 months now, everytime my computer starts up, it says "applying windows updates" or something like that, which is normal when restarting your computer after downloading updates. But after a while it says "updates were not configured directly, restarting..." I can't fix this problem by doing a system restore because I do not have a restore state that is from before the problem started, they are all too recent. So I think my only option (unless anyone can suggest a better one) is to reinstall Windows 7. But I've never reinstalled an OS, so I need to know:
-What will get deleted/uninstalled when I reinstall Windows?
-Will my personal files disappear after the reinstall?
-Will all the programs I have installed disappear after the reinstall?
-Will my system settings (mouse options, task bar settings) be reset to default?
I have my HDD partitioned I know, I think that means my files will not be affected but I want to be absolutely sure. I don't think it's necessary to provide specs, but if you need specs to provide advice then just ask.
Thanks in advance FP.
You'll be best doing a complete reinstall which means formatting the hard drive, so everything will be gone. So backup anything you want to keep

Well, you say it's partitioned... so in theory (i never tried) when you go to re-install the OS, just select format C: (or whatever your primary partition with the OS is) and everything in there will be no more (so make sure it's the right one. and the other partition should be ok, and hopefully doesn't have anything nasty on it.
Are you sure it's partition correctly and not just a recovery partition and then the OS partition?
-Will my personal files disappear after the reinstall?
The ones on the OS partition will. so make sure you get what you want off, and its not a bad idea to back up the other files too.
-Will all the programs I have installed disappear after the reinstall?
Most likely, unless you installed them to the other partition. even if you did you may have to set them up again. Plus when i put programs on my other HDD's, they sometimes by default store and save files to the OS HDD.
-Will my system settings (mouse options, task bar settings) be reset to default?
yes
If you only format your system partition, which is the one where your Windows is installed, system drivers, my documents, game saves etc... will be deleted.
Note that if any game on your system installs any files to your C: drive, they might not work after the Windows re-install.
