Supermarket giant Tesco has won £1.50 compensation from a customer who spilt a bottle of milk in one of its stores.
Shopper Cornelius Price, 40, threw the six-pint bottle in a temper, Llandrindod Wells Magistrates' Court heard.
It was claimed he was verbally abusive and escorted off the premises.
Admitting criminal damage, Price said he threw the milk towards the store manager saying "catch it" but it accidentally spilt.
I wonder how much money they payed to win that compensation
paid or payed?
Price was told to pay £1.50 compensation to Tesco, fined £75, ordered to pay £20 victim surcharge and £85 costs. The money will be deducted from his benefits at £10 a fortnight.
That is the most petty thing I ever heard a corporation even pursed over.
It's actually common for companies who catch people shoplifting or damaging property on purpose to charge for the product/or damage + a fine/civil recovery fee + and any other costs that might be associated with the incident.
...How long have you even waited to do that pun?
Worth it

Yeah they should let people do stuff like this without consequence.

So long the milk is now a fine cheese.
paid or payed?
Paid is preffered and techincally correct.
I'm surprised they didn't try and milk the guy for more money than £1.50.

He did have a temper tantrum and threw a 6 pint bottle of milk at the manager. 6 pints is this size.

It was fair of Tesco to do, they could of claimed a lot higher. It was more about teaching the customer a lesson in respect.

£85 of costs for cleaning a spilled milk ain't no small "lesson" if you ask me.
And that's before the fine.

especially if you're on benefits.

Well, it wasn't so much that the milk was spilt, but that it was thrown aggressively. I still agree that it's a bit much though, given the guy is on benefits and really can't afford to pay for this.

It's not like he spilled the milk on accident.

Regardless of benefit status you should not be able to go into a store and start throwing products around.
Though in his circumstances the punishment could've been something other than money, does England have an equivalent of community service?

we have community service.

If he's on benefits then it's likely he is considered 'disabled' and therefore can't do community service.
I mean likes pretty much tesco just doing what is required to get compensated without hassle. According to the article he "admitted criminal damage" (or at least thats what his lawyer plead) so like even he knew he was being malicious. Like what, how else should this been done?
The article gives almost no information, perhaps Tesco attempted to settle this out of court but the man refused? Maybe they are so autonomous that they went straight to court. The article doesn't say enough for anything to be said.

Hah, try telling that to ATOS, the fucks.

The fine, costs and surcharge are added by the court, not tesco itself.
Taking him to court is a bit silly, but I guess if he refused to pay for the milk then and there.
My local tesco shut down today
Maybe this story can save it

you missed the "at £10 a fortnight." - £5 a week isn't the difference between eating or not
you missed the "at £10 a fortnight." - £5 a week isn't the difference between eating or not
Actually, yeah it can be. More than once, I've had to go hungry after having paid all the bills that i have to, and being left with nothing for a week. Depends on the benefits the guy is on, if he's on JSA, even with rent paid and a discount on council tax, you generally get left with fuck all after paying required bills.

Benefits aren't the luxurious life of mansions and brown people the Daily Mail want you to think they are. Outside of a super minority who manage to claim some of the higher income benefits, you'll be lucky to afford heating in the middle of winter if you want to eat.

If you're on plain old JSA, you get a max of £ £72.40 a week. Now let's break down some basic costs per week.
Council Tax:£10
Power: Approx £20
Water: £10
Leaving you £32.40 a week for any ancilliary bills (gas for heating or whatever) and food. This is in summer, in winter you'll be paying more either for gas, or for more power usage. It can get to a point where, £1 for someone may be fuck all, but for you, it could mean your milk for most of the week.
so stupid, i used to work for jack in the box but i recently quit because the manager coouldn't be professional about shit. she edited the schedule and didn't notify me if i wanted to work ton that day (originally was off mon-wed) where the schedule read monday 10-6 i then came in willingly even though i was hungover but 15 minutes later i clocked out to go home before i got sick over everybodies food. So then my manager decided to dock 27 hours off of my week leavel me with 3 hours for the entire week. I then reported her ass to corporate which explains why she was so nice when i came in asking for my check. but still its fucked up. [on topic] i wasnt aware they'd bitch about a small carton of milk
I didn't expect that title to be literal.
