Hard Drive Disappears/Can't be Found (Restart fixes problem)
4 replies, posted
This just started when I got back from holidays. I have two hard drives on my computer, one is a TB, the other 500 GB. The TB drive is separated into two partitions (Windows and Videos), while the 500 GB one holds all my games (:D). The issue is with the 500 GB drive: lately, after what seems like a random but relatively short amount of time, my :D drive simply disappears. I can't find it, I can't play any games or even run steam, and re-scanning my disks will either not find it, or find it but be unable to activate or use it. A quick restart fixes this problem without fail. I ran chkdsk on it already and it returned no errors. I defragmented for good measure, but still the problem. Finally I gave up, backed up a few games off steam that I currently play, and formated the entire drive. This looked promising at first, as the problem didn't return. Fast forward to today, and the drive has disappeared again. I'm gonna shut down and take a peek inside to see if everything looks okay, but if anybody has any ideas that I haven't tried yet, it would be much appreciated.
Please don't say "reformat windows", as that is my last choice and I will do it if I can't fix it.
Get speedfan and report your smart values.
Also, next time you power cycle, shutdown and reseat the connectors on the harddrive.
If you don't like speed fan, get one of these utilities, and run either quick or extended tests. Post results!

Ran the Seagate short/long tests and the drive failed both of them. I'll shut down soon and do that, thanks for the help.
Can I get the SMART attributes as well?
It passes the SMART test, although I don't see where to get any specific attributes. I reseated the connectors, so i'll wait and see if it happens again.
