Looks interesting.
Hopefully the combat will be more than one-button. Chivalry pretty much nailed first-person melee combat, as an example.
No, mount and blade did.
I wonder if there will be the Diablo-style of loot drops, with randomized pieces of armour that your either scrap later on or keep since they're better than what you currently have? Or, since they're talking about armour customization, maybe it'll be like you have your armour, and you customize it with gems and runes and trinkets a'la Diablo, with your armour having sockets and whatnot. Probably the former, maybe with elements of the latter. Also, if they are doing first-person melee combat, they need to get it right; no mindless button-mashing as you wave your sword at an enemy until they fall over. I heard Dark Messiah had some good first-person combat, especially with the Ice Patches.
Mount & Blade (Warband specifically) is the pinnacle of melee in videogames though.
Mount and Blade's first person combat is awful, it's much better to play it in third person.
That's only because there are no special first person animations and you cannot see what you are doing very well because most of your attacks and blocks go outside your field of view at one point or another.
To be fair, Dead Islands melee combat wasn't bad.
No, mount and blade did.
Chivalry is pretty much mount and blade but with a bit more timing in the blocking.
Chivalry is pretty much mount and blade but with a bit more timing in the blocking.
And only one blocking direction (Well I guess it's technically got many, but your block wont be obsolete if you block in the wrong direction) and no skill gimmick like chamber blocking. Edit: Also no horses.
To be fair, Dead Islands melee combat wasn't bad.
If you play with analog settings on a controller the combat is one of the, if not the best. It's just so fun to use.
Mount and Blade's first person combat is awful, it's much better to play it in third person.
M&B's combat is pretty awful in general. Knights running about with their weapons stretched out waiting for an opening isn't exactly good. It worked, it did it's job pretty well, but was definitely not good medieval melee combat. [editline]29th April 2013[/editline] Also all I want from the Dead Island devs is the tech they showed years ago at Dead Island announcement in an actual game.
why is it whenever somebody comments on chivalry or M&B's melee combat the other game's crew walks in and they start duking it out
Dark Messiah's first person combat -> Chivalry. End of story.
Dark Messiah's first person combat -> Chivalry. End of story.
I found Dark Messiah of Might and Magic's combat system to be awful, you're just flailing at the enemy until you can kick them into an environmental hazard or stab them when they're lying on the ground, unless there's something I've been missing.
I found Dark Messiah of Might and Magic's combat system to be awful, you're just flailing at the enemy until you can kick them into an environmental hazard or stab them when they're lying on the ground, unless there's something I've been missing.
Power struggles, head bobbing, screen tilting when strafing, directional attacks, powered directional attacks, adrenaline mode, dismemberment, backstabs, magic weapons, throwing oil on your enemy then igniting with spell/environment, kicking to make your opponent stagger, and all of this is just melee. There's ranged and magic too (with each magic spell having an alternate effect in adrenaline mode). There are so many environmental objects to use to your advantage as well as many magic spells taking advantage of that. Each area and enemy can create a different fight; Flailing is just how you happened to play it. Also consider the fact that it came out in '06 and to this day is one of the greatest action RPG's on the source engine. It was an absolute game-changer in the past and I still see it as one today in many ways.

When you faced weaker enemies and made and effort to kill them WITHOUT kicking, it was awesome.

I just went through the game kicking everyone into all of those conveniently-placed spike death-traps. :v: Seriously how the Hell could you canonically and believably explain the hundreds of spike traps that just so happen to be lying around whenever there are people you have to fight, and only exist where there are people you have to fight and never anywhere else? :v:
The Dark Messiah combat allowed for some really intense stuff, especially on higher difficulties. I always ran away throwing boxes at enemies. Trying to lure them into traps or catch them by surprise. Seriously on higher difficulties Dark Messiah is even better and more challenging.
A mix between Dark Messiah and Chivalry would be so fucking sex. However, I am not a fan of chivalry's kind of wonkyness sometimes, and I am not really a fan of the one button block system. Something like Dark Messiah with exploration and an open world would be amazing
On one hand this does sound interesting. Though on the other hand Dead Island Riptide just got released a few days ago. I'm wary of this.
let's hope they don't use the same shitty chrome engine this time dead island had some fun times but it felt like trying to puppeteer a potato
This pretty much looks fucking grand, to me. I loved almost everything about Dead Island, even with all of it's flaws, and I would have no complaints at all if this was just medieval Dead Island. In fact, that sounds amazing.
I'm not gonna lie it sounds pretty cool :downs: I hope the 4 player coop is local as well
It would be really epic if they would create a game with randomly generated dungeons and loot but with the combat of Dark Messiah. Like a generic dungeon crawler, perhaps like a roguelike.
To be fair, Dead Islands melee combat wasn't bad.
I liked it quiet a bit.
Dead Island Riptide was just released, Call of Juarez Gunslinger is out in less than a month, now this is announced. Are they even that big enough to be doing all this or is the quality of the games going to be lacking?
Also all I want from the Dead Island devs is the tech they showed years ago at Dead Island announcement in an actual game.
You mean that gore system with the multiple layers and all that? That's already in Dead Island, it's used on all the zombies.
