Hello, last night while playing a very intense game of the Sims, I noticed a slight burning smell. I initially thought it was the central heat kicking in, and the smell was it burning off dust, but the smell returned once I turned my computer on the next day. I've pinpointed the location to the power supply by investigating with my trusty nose. Visually, it doesn't look dusty at all. It looks like it just came out of the box. Do you think it's time to get a new one? Or do you think a piece of cat hair or something managed to work its way in? Right now I'm homeless and pretty short on money due to helping my brother with his medical bills due to cancer. Anyways, I'll respond unless something happens. Right now I'm house sitting for my aunt so I do have an internet connection and a place to plug in my computer. Thanks, Sean Also, it smells fucking bad and is probably toxic to breath.
Its a bomb, and if you have $60 you can get a new PSU. I wouldn't even chance trying to fix it or tamper with it if it smells like its burning. What you could probably do is unplug it, Leave it for about an hour and then take the outer shell off and see if something is burnt.
Or you could RMA it I did that with my modXstream pro 500 watt. [editline]2nd December 2011[/editline] They even accepted it with a damaged warrenty label.

After about 30 seconds, the bleeder resistors will drain all of the remaining power out of the capacitors making it safe to work on.
